EUFAULA Eufaula, February 16—(Special.)—An active campaign is being wager throughout the county for and against the proposal to bold semi annual ses sions of the Barbour county circuit court at Clio, as well as at Eufaula and TClayton. Petitions and counter peti tions are now being circulated all ovei the county, and while Clio has sent a delegation to Montgomery to fight foi the passage of the hill, equally active delegations from oth*r portions of thr county are working to have the bill which was introduced in the sennit by Senator G. Ernest Jones of Clio killed. It is claimed that the court would mean a great deal of additional and unnecessary expense to the county. Excellent progress is being made upon the solid concrete dt id gw which a Bir mingham firm is erecting across the Barbour creek, two miles south of Eu faula. Nearly all of the piers and abutments have been built and work will be started soon on the superstruc ture. The bridge is the first of its kind erected in the county, and 13 the be ginning of a great deal of concrete bridge work that is being planned by the board of revenue. There is a decided improcenic nt {ri business and financial conditions licit, according to those in touch with the situation. An even belter tone is ex pected after the first of the coming month, when a great deal of money will be put into circulation, as the re sult of advances made to farmers and tenants. Plenty of m >n*-y can he had on cotton here at the late of 6 cents per pound, and the ease of the money in ir ket is helping to improve conditions in every way . As soon as insurance claims are ad justed. property hollers and business men of Clio, who wen- burned out' in last week's fire, the most disastrous the town has had in years, will re build ami begin business again. - --^ t.. * " E*t« 1870 $hid« Manager Wheeler Hotel Eutaw, Ala. Phono 7486-7487 I I A Fundamental | Safe and rapid railway transportation is a funda mental business necessity. ’ The construction of railway mileage antedates by / 5; but a short time the rapid development of agricultural i interests and commercial activity. ^ Property values are doubled,' trebled, quadrupled, overnight, simply by the bona fide announcement of in- I tention to construct a modern railway through a given section. It is therefore remarkable that so many individuals have seen fit to attack and hamper the railway inter ests of the country in their efforts to earn a sufficient amount to enable them to continue to supply good ser vice and realize something for betterments and exten sions. Not only that: People who might otherwise feel in clined to invest in plans for the construction of new railroads refrain from doing so, believing that their in vestment would be subject to attack and possible loss through adverse public sentiment. Regulation, like all powerful weapons, should be used with the utmost caution by intelligent men. of good judgment, who are conversant with the powers and dangers of regulation. The L. & N. writes of these things because it does not believe regulation means destruction. Particularly is this true when the thing regulated is a Fundamen tal Business Necessity—a part and parcel of the com mercial fabric of the nation. No spirit of antagonism should exist between the railroad and those empowered by law to regulate the railroad. I Rather should they meet and discuss whatever diff- i erence may exist in a spirit of mutual benefit and fair ness, each bearing its share of Whatever Burden im posed, and each enjoying its share of the fruits of its U ; labors. | It is in just such spirit as this that the L. & N. oper ates throughout the vast naturally rich territory tra versed by its lines. The freight and passenger service afforded the terri tory is unsurpassed in rapidity, safety and facility. - We believe the people appreciate the service, and the policy behind it. and we look to them confidently to favor us with their patronage, and through the effi ciency of our service, to merit their good will.
