It was stated today that the advisory committee appointed by the city com missioners would, at a meeting to lie held In a few days, recommend that the city float a bond issue to raise funds for the construction of the w'harf. It is said that the city will have no trouble in disposing of the bonds and that the money w’ould be secured and the work of actual construction begin immediately. It is planned to have the w'harf completed and ready for the hand ling of freight from the self-propelled barges of the Alabama-New Orleans Transportation company by early fall. The question of adequate wharf facili ties for Tuscaloosa has been paramount with the Board of Trade for over a Vear and a committee from that body has had the matter under advisement for sometime, but until now no definite ac tion had been taken. It is thought that a municipally owned wiiarf will prove a paying investment to the city as well as to the merchants and other Interested parties. SAY FRENCH GAINS ARE INSIGNIFICANT Berlin, March 12.—(Via London, 9:10 p. m.)—Although French reports for sev eral w'eeks have been claiming daily gains in the Champagne region, it is said in well informed quarters here that total gains of the French during the entire battle have been insignificant, amounting only fo about 200 feet at three different places. These positions were abandoned, it was said, because during the long struggle the trenches wrere destroyed by shell fire and rendered useless. The three places are north of Le Mesnil, north of Beause jour and northeast of Beausejour. During fighting from February 17. to date, it was said that on all the other parts of the front where the French have attempted to break through the line remains in the possession of the Germans, who. have gained ground at several places.
