Pkone »M1 Mala CONTRACT LET FOR LINE TO CEDAR POINT Mobile and Ohio to Be Ex tended, Giving Service to Dauphin Island News was received in Birmingham yes terday from iToblle Chat the contraot for the Immediate construction of a rail road from the terminus of the Bay Shore division of the Mobile and Ohio railroad, near Alabama Port to Cedar Point, has been signed by Tidewater Securities cor poration, representing the owners of Dauphin Island, and J. N. Qillls & Son, railroad contractors. The contract la dated March 16, and provides that work shall begin by or before April 1. and that the road shall be completed ready for operation bv or before July 1 of the piesent year. Cedar Point Is the extreme southern point of the mainland. 26 miles south of Mobile, Dauphin Island lying Just beyond and across the vfater a distance of less than four miles. According to J. M. Dewberry, president of Tidewater Securities corporation, with offices In Birmingham and Mobile, the railroad will be oontinued to the Island, but that while being built from Cedar Point to the island an adequate freight anil passenger ferry boat service will be operated to connect wltlf the .trains at Cedar Point. A schedule of less than 1 hour and 30 minutes from Mobile to the Islsnd Is planned. Mr. Dewberry states that his company is also ready to guar antee electric light and power plant, waterworks system and telephones. An Interesting feature of the plans at Dauphin Island Is'the coaling station. Ac cording to revised map, the coaling station wll’ be near Fort Gaines on the Big Dau phin side and only 12,000 feet from deep water. It is to be on a 30-foot depth basis until the government deepens the "outer bar” to a greater depth, and the opinion Is expressed that ships drawing a feet will bunker at Dauphin Island within 12 months. “Wando” Is Tog’s Name Washington, March 17.—Secretary Dan iels has assigned the name Wando to the naval tug building at the Charleston, H. Speaking to a reporter of The Age-Her ald. Mr. Agassiz said: “From what I have gleaned from con veisatlon with many of the recognized leaders of industry in the United States, jj I cannot but feel that we are emerging fvom the labyrinth of uncertainty and doubt that has marked the last 18 months and are entering on a era of certain and sustained national prosperity. Much as we must regret the deplorable world f struggle on the other side of the Atlantic, we cannot but recognize that with its ces sation will come a reawakening of trade on this side of the water that could not | have been induced by natural conditions. After the war, wlifch on account of its immensity cannot last very long, there will come the period of reconstruction, 2 and in that reconstruction the United j States will play of necessity a predomi nant role. “What this will mean to the entire country, and especially to the south ern states, can be only foreshadowed, but it requires no vivid imagination . to see the mills of this land working night and day and amid an unpre- jj cedented prosperity. The iron, steel, | cotton and lumbering industries will is be especially benefited and as these industries constitute the very back bone of southern industry it is only reasonable to suppose that their pros perity will be reflected in every oth er field of endeavor in the great south land. “Canada, too, hopes .to move forward with her great southern neighbor in the march of progress and to that end she is materially increasing her wheat acreage and extending her other activ ities. To tide her over the period that will intervene before the next harvest she is looking to the tourist from the United States, who in other years, has chosen some section of Europe for his j summer playground. Every year, as you no doubt know, more than a quar ter of a million Americans cross the ^ Atlantic, leaving hundreds of millions of good American money behind them. This year European travel will be mueh*restricted. And Canada feels that \ it is an opportunity that will never recur to exploit her wonderful scenic and climatic resources as never before. “As a summer region, indeed, no section of this continent can offer the peculiar advantages that the dominion can, and it is questionable if they can j be duplicated anywhere. Besides her iroomporable Rockies, her Great bakes and St. Lawrence regions, so well and favorably known, she has millions of j square miles of territory that is prac- j tically virgin, and constitutes an un • paralleled paradise for the sportsman." 9100 REWARD THE ABOVE REWARD WILL BE PAID FOR THE ARREST AND DB- j LIVERY OF WILLIAM POOL, RATH ER A REDDISH COLOR NEGRO AGE ABOUT 55 YEARS, HEIGHT j ABOUT « FEET.
