Brock, former alderman of Hunts ville, and for many years a prominent merchant and traveling salesman of Huntsville, died Sunday from a stroke of paralysis, which he sustained several days ago while traveling in the Sand mountain district south of here. He was brought home unconscious late last week and his condition became gradually worse until the end. Mr. Brock is survived by his widow, a daughter and three sons. Robert Davis, a white man, is the first victim of the new prohibition law in this county. He was arrested on a charge of bootlegging liquor in the Whitesburg dis trict on the Tennessee river, and was given a nonjury trial before Judge Bal lentine of the law and equity court. Hs was adjudged guilty and sentenced to serve 17$ days at hard labor on the public roads. Superintendent 8. R. Butler of Madison county has taken up the movement to establish night schools in this county for tlie benefit of adults whose education le deficient and pupils who have lost time and not been able to keep up with their classes. Asia j Minor, on the Gulf of Adramyti) have been ordered to evacuate the city and go Into the interior of Asia Minor, says an Athens dispatch to the Havas agency. The government has sent an energetic protest to the Porte, the dispatch adds. Aivali has a population of 26,000. mostly Greeks. OVERRULE MOTION TO QUASH INDICTMENT Boulder, Colo., July 19.—Judge Neil F. Graham today overruled a motion to quash murder indictments against five labor leaders, growing out of coal strike dis orders at the Hecla mine. He set the case for trial August 23. The defense based its argument on the claim that R. W. Fleming was appointed district attorney Illegally to succeed George A. Carlton, who became governor last January. July 19.—(Special.)—A tele phone message received here reports a terrible tragedy which is said to have occurred at the home of Murray Smith, 12 miles east of here, this morning when Smith shot his wife, inflicting fatal In juries, and then turned the gun on him self and killed himself. Mrp. Smith lived for a few hours. She was shot in the back, according to re ports, and the weapon used was a shot gun. It is said that Smith’s mind was unbalanced. A family of five children survive the deceased. Both Smith and his wife are of prominent families of this county.
