Dr. Wirst has just returned from “over there." To the correspondent of The Age-Her ald Dr. Wirt said: "One German who was of a party which stormed an American trench suf fered a severe wound. When soldiers at tempted to' lift him into an ambulance he fought desperately, and thereby made his injury all the more serious. In the ambulance he continued his resistance, and way not at peace even when in a cot at tae hospital.. “Some hours later, his wounds dressed, we asked him through a French interpre ter the reason for his strange action. He then declared that German officers had notified the men that while they would receive fair treatment at the hands of English and French soldiers, Americans, in the event of their cap ture. would first torture them and T.hen put them to death. “That afternoon the German heard someone playing an accordeion. and asked that he be given permission to play it. The accordion was the property of Capt. Archie Roosevelt. It was deliv ered to the German with the compliments of Captain Roosevelt. After he had played it a while he stopped suddenly and his eyes filled with tears. ‘To think.’ he said, ‘that I have re ceived such treatment after all that J have heard of American brutality. Why, you are giving me the same attention, in the same place, that you bestow on a son of the former President.’ ” Dr. Wirt is connected with the medical department of the Red Cross.
