Burger’s Letter New Orleans, August 6.—The market continues to rule erratic and unsettling, displaying no decided tendency for the present, fluctuating widely as result of one development, favorable and unfavor able, following another. So far as the large surplus carried over into this season, 6.824,000 bales against 4.422.000 last year, is concerned, this fea ture seems to have been discounted, as it is realized that as large as is the sur plus of raw cotton, the deficit in cot ton goods throughout the world is even greater compared with the normal. Furthermore the trade appreciates the fact that the south is in a better posi tion to carry its' portion of the surplus 3.574.000 bales against 2,184,000 one year ago, than it was at this time last year, be cause of the higher prices obtained for the staple the past season, which were the highest since the closing days of the Civil war. Not only is the world bare of cotton goods, but American as well as European mills, hold light stocks of the raw ma terial.. There is the possibility, if not probabil ity, of a hot wave scare in the south west. SELMA Selma, August 6.—(Special.)—Mrs. C. W, Hall, wife of Councilman Hall, of the 5th ward, was accidentally shot by her six year-old son, Calvin, as she sat at the breakfast table at her home on Maxey street about 8:00 o'clock this morning. Her arm and left breast were badly lac erated by tho discharge of the shot gun. She was carried immediately to the hos pital where her wounds were considered, severe, but hope la held out for her re covery. The accident resulted from a child ish prank, when the little son of Mr, and Mrs. JIall saw the gun, which had! just %een cleaned and loaded by Mr. Hall leaning against the • front door where Mr. Hall had placed it when call ed to speak to a neighbor at the front gate. Picking up the gun the boy ran into the dining room where his mother sat at the breafast table, and within a few moments Mr. Hall and Percy Smith who stood talking at the front gate, heard the shot and rushed in to find Mrs. Hall badly wounded. The number of privately owned cars is said to be about 4000, and there are approximately 500 taxi cabs. While this number of automo biles seems very small for a city of 1,000.000, the novelty of automobile* and the purchasing power of the peo ple must be taken into account. It is thought that American cars will soon predominate on the streets of Tndin, and it Is interesting to note that all the motor cars imported into the city of Calcutta since tho signing of the armistice and the removal of the im port embargo have been of American manufacture.
