UUILUIXU ASSOCIATION'S. '
Wo copy a second article to-lay from the jrpm
pliw Apical, in continuntioa of the suiyect corn
iDnieil J-'riday:
Bildiso and Ijoxs As.'ociatioss. In our lat
i sti we hinted briefly at the history, use? and
mode of operation of Uie.-e asociationi Our pur
lMliis morning is to allude to the stimulus which
''wy give to mechanical enlcqirij, jfi well, as to
economy and thrill ainuug the humbler clasis of
Zjf society, regarding tint societies in the light of sa
ving institution.-. We have s-aiil, and experience
prove?, that these hoeieltes wind up, on aa avcnie,
M the end of fix years; but it ihould be borueiii
mind that they never wind ut until thev can nav
two hundreJ dolh.rs on each thare; so lliat the ap- -j
preimco or lauormg man wno Mioscnues one share,
(SI) at the end of the six years will draw out two
hundred dollars. This amount is within the Kver
and capacity of every man iu the community, lie
saves and pays into the Association -one dollar per
month for six years, which is $72. At the end of
thaf time he draws out, not only his monthly sa
vings of one-dollar, with six per cent interest, but
he"VJua11y draws out two hundred dollars more
than fifty per cent ou the amount he pays in. This
shows the advantage to the mere stockholders; wc
yesterday showed the advautage of such societies
to thovj who desire to procure money for invest
ment. But further There are but few laboring men in
community that instead of one, could not af
ford to ay into the Association live dollars per
month, which is sixty dollars per annum or three
hundred and sixty dollars for the six year?, at
j the end of which time hv would be allowed to draw,
. not or thi amount only with simple interest, but
fur one tliousanJ iMlars, this bjing two hundred
dollars for each slians subscribe. As a mere sa
ving's institution then, these Associations are wor
thy the encouragement and support of die com
munity, and the protection of the Legislature. Ev
ery nun or even every apprentice boy who is able
to pay in one dollar per month, is entitled to be
come a member anil enjoy the bsneDts of the Afe
"ociatiou, which acts and operates upon the pria
npil of mutual benefit: a benefit to the mere stock
holder in the shape ol a saving bank, and a bene
fit to the man who wishes to invest in real estate in
the shape of a moneyed institution which will afford
hun the means at a rate not exceeding six per dint
pr annum for purchasing him a home for himself
and family. V cannot conceive of any higher
recommendation for the fostering and encouraging
of ueh institution'.
'But as a stimulus to meelianical enterprise what
sha 1 we siy of these i-ocietie?? We have shown
that every thrifty mechanic, by availing himself of
their benefits, may become his own landlord by
an outlay fort-ix years equal to what he would oth
erwise pay solely for rent.
f If this is uot a sufficient stimulus, we do not I
know what, further we could otter. But of this we
ie well aireil, that the establishment of only
one As.ojijliou of this thai acter in Memphis, would
give such au impulse to mechanical enterprise in
our city, m wonld at once lead to an enhancement
of vahti" in all the real estate contiguous to tho city
of the bluffs. With the.-e Associations, poverty
finds itself enabled to level itself up with the rest
of 'the busy world, and all are enabled to go on,
hand in hand, to thrift and aflluence. But more
annn.
, It is proper that we should acknowledge our in
debteduesa to the merits of these Associations to
Dr. J. P. Wallace, of Mississippi, who is familiar
with the workings of the Assosiation in Charleston
and other Southern cities, and who is moreover, a
warm advocate of their general ue and establish
ment throughout the country.
In our Mon lay morning's paper, we shall refer
tcfthe fact again, setting forth, to the best of our
judgment aud information, the benefit of such in
stitutions to the public at large.
