If the rumble Of wheels should arrest your attention, lie sure you will see a vehicle that has had batter days, whose curtains now flap i the breeM. and will not stay fastened, while it gilding and bright paint, hare long. since given way, to the dingy hues of old age. The horses which draw it will at a glance be convicted as of "low degree" and thoroughly plebeian in appearance and accomplishments, t But "there's life in the old laml yet," a anyone will admit who fball witness tlw resolute and patent energy with which our people meet and struggle to overcome the difficulties of 'the. situation. The con vulsions "of four -years which have leveled houses, forests and fences with the ground in all this re gion have aho changed its social aspects in a variety of wayg, so that while many of the old landmarks remain, we have raad&J great changes in many things. "ISbvus ordo rcrum," which meaas that old things have passed away, excepting old barouches, buggies and horses, and bid clothes, as hint ed at above. Among these great changes is that involving the relations of the whites and blacks. The former finds himself crip pled in his resources by four years of ac tual Or comparative loss; then, he must adapt himself, despite the habits and train ing pf a life-time, to an industrial system, comparatively new and untried; while tho black man, now "lord of himself," (I will not add, in a general sense, "that heritage of woe," though it has proven po in many in stances,) has emerged from a bondage of a hundred years, and moves into a new world, all the requirements of which he does not understand, though an apt scholar in large ly more cases than might reasonably have boon presumed. Under all these disadvan tages, I am happy to say that the relations between whites and blacks in this county are kindly, and that the latter exhibit a de cided and marked improvement since last year. They have disappeared almost al together from the towns, many having made contracts with farmery for cropping upon the shares with them, and others havine; i f i . t i r . rni . i nireu meniseivea lor wages. AJicir nouses now dot the surface of the large plantations. and I am told that tlie spinning' wheel and the loom may be heard in some of them, and that almost all ol these people exhibit a greater readiness tolabor, and a more thrifty turn of mind than heretofore. The cotton crop has become the all en- crossinc; crop of Kutlierionl. .Most of the last year's crop has gone forward to market, but some still remains in the hands of far mers. Every day may bo seen passing "Tho corded bags of inowy linC which are seeking the great marts of the world s commerce. Ilie opinion is expressed that a cood deal of cotton still remains in the hands of the farmers in this county who are waiting a rise in prices and arc holding up for 50 and CO and even 75 cent, which I fear they will not realize. Farmers are going bravely to work, in preparation for the crop of Jaoo. .Many have commenced breaking up their fields, others are rebuild ing and repairing fences, and the work of ti i ,.. .. i - . I. - reuaoiiauon goes sureiy ana spccuiiy lor ward. AVhat was the amount of the cotton crop ofEutherford last year? The opinion ha? been expressed by two intelligent gentle men, themselves planters, one of whom I hear has taken some pains to obtain accurate information upon the sub ject, that it amounted to twelve thousand bales. Uthcrs thinlcit was not more tiian two-thirds of that amount, or eight thousand bales, in winch opinion 1 am inclined upon rellecuon to coincide, ilad there been a full crop the first named figures would have bceu reached, but it fell short one-third, or, some say, one half; hence I think 12,000 bales an over-estimate. In the palmy days of cotton planting Eutlierfonl produced alwut 15,000 bales, and these figures will be exceeded this year should a favorable season be granted us. Occasionally may lie seen upon our streets tho erect and sturdy form of Hon. Mer edith P. Gentry, now an honored citixen of our county, whose manly bearing and Jra-nk and vivacious disposition still commend him to his host of friends as wheri, in times gone by, he stirred the hearts of the people from tho hustings, and shook the councils of tlie nation by his surprising and powerful elo quence. Col. Gentry is in fine health and is engaged with all the energy of lib vigorous nature in "reconstructing" his plantation near this place upon the new industrial sys tem. May his future be as pleasant as his past has been honorable, nnd gratifying, (we may well wippose,) to a nature full of noble instincts. A few sales of lands at public vendue took place on last Monday; among them, the homestead .of the late Mrs. Sarah McCul loch. The tract contained 000 acres within 2 miles of the town and the price at which it was sold was $40 per acre. A few years since it would have commanded $00 per acre, bnt then there were buildings, fences and forest timber upon it, 'which were all swept away during the progress of the war. There arc very few transactions in real estate in this vicinity at the present time. Murfreesboro has now a Eecordcr's Court and a regularly organized police force, of which Mr. Eobt. w. January is chief. The Recorder U our excellent fellow citizen Mr. David D. VTendel. The contract for building a new Jail was awarded a few days since to Mr. Alex. Dnimwright at $14 per thousand brick. It is supposed a new freight house will be built thifl year by the Nashville and Chattanooga. Eailroad Company. It is much needed. The call for a public meeting at Nashville on the 22d, meets with cordial afpreval here. I presume a meeting will be field to appoint delegates. Mosxouth. Lock Ja"W. The junior abolitibn newspaper of this city is very much alarmed "at the growing signs, of discontent which the country ex hibits over that, treasonable action of the rump congress. It has cause for fear. It may not be that the people) will" resort to arms to redress their grievances, but their indignation is likely to take a shape at the ballot-box that will as effectually quash rad icalism as if it were put to, the sword. Arguing simply from anology, why should not the people of both the north and the south rise, and, with arms in their hand, march upon Washington, and dissolve the Parliament that now substitutes treason for legislation ? jA Cromwell once did tlie same tlung for less cause, and posterity not only holds Cromwell guiltless, but makes him both a hero and a patriot. This nation fought four years to hinder dis union in the South. Is disunion in the South any more infamous and any more worthy of retribution than iH Washington ? Why should this people permit a fcw radi cals to do at Washington what they pre vented the South from doing at a cost of naif a million lives and an cxpenditurem money of billions? We would not tolerate when.it came, from South Carolina; is it more tolerable when coming from Pennsyl- nia and Massachusetts 7 We do not want war. Tlie old secession movement, led by Jeff Davis., could have been put down by simply .referring the whole matter to the unbiased action of the people. The new secession, inaugurated by Stevens, can be put down in the 'same way. War is as much justifiable nowas it-was then ; but it is better to do now, what nkhhu nave been dono then leave the question to tho sov ereign people. Posterity will hare a nice nucstion to de cide; whether the greater traitor of the pres ent day is Jell. Uavis or Anad. istcvens., JUie l.H'.. 1,.a Mn-t, ..1,1 41.A r,nr. T.A disgrace of failure. The only reason that wUl prevent "posterity from gibbetting Stev ens is tliat men do not liang swccwwful rebels. if Jell. Uavia is ever hung, it will not be be cause he seceded, but because he failed in his entertirisc. We assure our trembling cotemporary that although there is reason tor war, there will be none. Tho people will not allow themselves to be precipitated into another contest They will take up this matter at the polls. If they do not dissolve a treason able congress, and liang its leaders, higher than Hainan, it will not be because they ought not to do these things, but for the rea son that tho ballot oners an equally sure, although a lcssswilt, remedy. DESTITUTION' IN ATEANTA. From the Christian Iadex.1 Having heard mncli of the wretched con dition of the poor in this city and its vicinity, we set out 'on Sunday afternoon to see with our own eyes whether these things were so. Wc found that the-halfbfld not been told. Multitudes, comprising the ajred and the sick, and many women and children, have no protection except tents, many of which are worn out, flimsy, and almost worthless. The canvass being rotten and full tC holes, and the tent having no floor bat tlie wet ground, the inhabitant are almost as much exposed as they would be with nothing above thent but the sky. Jfany of them are destitute of fuel and have no money to buy. Families of six and seven, have not blanket enough to keep one person warm ia- a good room with a fire in it. Some have nothing to eat except cold victuals which Jhey beg, aad these are not always In good supply. Pew or none of them have clething suffi cient for, the season. We found one woman a widow, who, with six children, had no shelter but a scanty tent cloth, through which the wind and rain might penetrate as through a scire. Her health had failed under her hardships; her, oldest boy aged, perhaps, 15, also broken down by priration.and exposure, was unable to work. The other children were yemg and were all small and ill-grown apnamitly dwarfed for lack of nourishment, A one of them, were well. Two of thent were sick, and one poor emaciated little girl, five years old, looked as if she would ceaee to hunger, and find her rest. They had ne money, so food, abnout no clothing, and no friends. Self-support was out of the question the woman could not labor; Ifer husband wm killed at Chlckamaua. When Oct). Sherman cap tured Atlanta, 3te sent this wohmr' and her fawily, with others, te Lotskville, Ky. She wag afterwards sent back to Atlanta, and here she is helpless and ready to perish. We liave mentioned thk case so particu larly only to Illustrate othem. How many there are in similar condition, or more or less forlorn, we do not know. Hut the out skirts of the city are, whitened with tents. There mut be some hundred of them. All these are the victims ef war. All of seen better ikvs. Some of them have always been accustomed, until recently, to all the Ordinary comforts of life. Wo hare no commeiU te moke ne ex hortation to offer.
