Goldsmith's Citizen of the World quaintly
remarks that "marriage has been compared
to a game of skill for life; it is generous,

I am told both sides use every art to con
ceal their defects from each other before
marriage, and the rest of their lives may be
regarded as doing penance for their dissim
ulaffotL" Is this a malicious slander or a rudely
expressed truth? Are not lovers all the
world over zealously engaged in cheating
each other? Does not the very state of
mental exaltation, produced by an absorb
ing affection, give birth to an unpremed
itated deception ? Nay, has not love, in the
dawn of Its existence, a beautifying in
fluence upon the whole constitution of a
raan's soul ? Arc not common place minds
elevated and rendered poetic by its refining
power? What, then, must be iU effect upon
spirits of liner mold ?
" The period of an open, prosperous be

The probation of a long engagement is
the surest taliiman against this rude dissolv
ingof the fijell that surrounds lovers. Din

acter are revealed by unforsccn chances by
life's inevitable mutations: and, being dis
covered at tills blissful period when no life
sliackle makes endurance compulsory, even
grave faults and temper-trying peculiarities
are readily tolerated and excused. Mental

siderable experience in the matter, discour

Tho property of the company consists of lease
hold interests in the counties of Overton, Fen
tress. White, Jackson and Warren, in the State of
Tennessee, amounting in the aggregate to over
eight thousand acres.
The membership of the company and the Board
of Directors comprise men of business experience
and reputation, and of a thorough and practical
acquaintance with the oil mines of Pennsylvania.
The mininir superintendent was one of the first
explorers of the oil fields of that State, and struck
the first flowing oil well in the country, well
known as the Ilequembourg well, and to which
the oil interests of Pennsylvania, then in- their
nascent state, were very largely indebted.
Tho company will lease portions of their valu
able larids, in small, tracts, to private parties or
companies, for imediate development.

J ESTEEM MYSELF FORTUNATE IN
L being able to offer the services of this cele
brated race horse and scarce less distinguished
stallion to the bloodstock breeders of Tennessee
and States adjoining.
He will make the next season commencing first
of February, and ending first of July, at my
stzblcs, six miles from Nashville on the Harding
Pike.
Brown Dick's racing career was unequalled by
any horse of his day, except tho renowned
Lexington.
I deem it unnecessary to present a detailed
account of his successful career upon all the
courses from Charleston to New Orleans. It is
sufficient to mention his great race at New Orleans
when he beat Arrow and others three miles in
5.30. 5.23 a race unequalled at that time in
the annals of the American turf. Many spectators
of that wonderful performance have assured me
he won with perfect ease, and that if ho had been
permitted to go another mile at full speed, would
liavo equalled, if not surpassed Lexington's great
race of four miles in seven minutes, nineteen and
three-quarter seconds.
Brown Dick's services will bo limited to thirty
marcs, besides my own, at seventy-five dollars a
season, cash, and must in all cases be paid before
tho removal of the property.
Marcs will bo kept at two dollars per week, or six
dolars per month.
All necessary attention given to mares left in
my .charge, but no liability for accidents and
escapes.
