Tlie Cleveland Herald of Saturday, gives
an account of the taming of a ruunlerer in
that city, under sentence of death. As the
time drew nigh for the execution, Cooper,
the doomed man, became unmanageable.
Clone oliservation of his movements con
vinced Sheriff Jennings that another at
tempt to escape would be made, and he con
cluded to place him iu irons. By some
means, probably through some of the prig
oners, Cooper became aware of the intention
of the phcrifF. It was decided to put the
irons on hint on Wednesday. During the
day he went into his cell, and barricaded
himself within it- lie tors up his bunk,
and placed the pieces against the door.
When the sheriff camo to shackle him, he
xwore that no one pliould enter his cell, and
that the irons should never go on his limbs
while ho was alive. He was perfectly wild
with excitement. His eyes glistened through
the barred door like those of an infuriated
tiger. He raved and tore around his cell
lika a madman, cursing and swearing in
the mot blasphemous manner.
The Shcrifl found that it would be inipos
eible to confine him without considerable
assistance. He, therefore, called in several
of the prominent men of the town, to consult
m to the host course to be pursued. Among
them was Dr. D. It. Joining, who proposed
that chloroform should be used to subdue
the enraged murderer. It was at first objec
ted to by pome; but Keys and Uraham
being consulted, it was decided that that was
the only means of accomplishing the desired
end. Two largo syringes were procured,
that would each hold about one pound of the
Hubtlc fluid. The syringes were filled with
tho chloroform, a lied ptilt procured to
place over the grating of the cell door, and
after evcrythiug was prepared the contents
of the syringes was discharged into the cell,
and luckily struck Cooper full in tho face.
He was somewhat taken aback by this
novel procedure, nnd told them to come on
with their doctor stuff, but they would never
subdue him iu that manner. A second dis
charge of the chloroform laden syringe, how
ever, did the work. In little less than four
minutes from the time of the first injection
of the chloroform, the raging man was quiet,
and sank dowti on the floor perfect! help
less. The Sheriff and his assistants took
him out into tho corridor of the jail, where
the manacles were placed on his legs and
arms. Iu about fifteen minutes lie revived,
but the deed was done, and he was unable to
do further harm. As soon as he became
able to speiik and move, he raised his man
acled hands and said with a wicked oath.
"Gentlemen, you have showed a good deal

tiles, well worth civing to the world. The
first is the record of a groat battle bclwcen
the three altovc named.
"1 saw a very curious experiment with the
cobra, which was however, rather cruel.
All houses in India have a current of air
constantly passing through them. It is nec
ccssary to protect tho cnndlos by glass bell
shaped' shades. Under one of these, inver
ted, was placed the snake, in company with
three large black rats, a couple of scorpions,
and a cenliped. Tho ccntiped is about
six inches long, and if it crawls ovc a man
leaves the unpleasant feeling of a very pain
ful rheumatism for more than a year. I
am unable to state the feeling of this happy
family at being thus suddenly thrown to
gether. I should judge from their proceed
ing that their ideas were, to say the least,
antagonistic. The snake lav quiet ; the scor
pion ran races round the edge of the shade;
the ccntiped rolled hinielf up. The rats
were tho only creatures which seemed alive
to the unhappy state ot their coniincment,
and Bhowcd it by a game of lcaj frog over
the venomous part of tho family, lly an
unlucky trip on the head of the snake, one
of the nits at lat aroused him from his state
of insensibility, and expiated his ofiencc on
the spot, aa lie fell dead from a bite. Tho
other rats instantly darted on the snake, who
succumbed to their united attack ; they bit
him from head to tail, and he died; having,
with the little ioison left after killing the
first rat, severely wounded tho second. Tho

mode of treatment however proved a fail
ure, as the second rat who hail been wound
ed died. The two rats had however, put
the scorpions hort de annual, so the la.-t of
combative family were now the rat and the
ccnlitxxl; tho last named had no chance
with the former, and specdilv fell a victim,
the rat coming off victor. As a tribute to
Ills pluck and prowess, he was nllowod to
return to his native haunts, where he may
be still enjoying perfect health."

A Paris blacksmith has invented a new
system of shoeing horses. Instead of tho
shoe being placed frequently much too hot
on tho hoof, and burning its own resting
place, the outside of the hoof is cut awny
rotind the foot to about the depth of half an
inch; this leaves a ledge into which the shoo
litis and is then flush with the frog, which
just touches the ground, and the whole foot
rest on the ground instead of being raised
as of old by the shoe. The visible advan
tasss of this arc that the foot is little, pared
andinstead of a groat heavy shoe, the ani
mal is shod in what are litlleless than facing
plate. The advantages claimed by the
inventor are that the horse never slips that
the shoe allow tho foot to expand naturally,
and that it lasts as long and is as cheap at
the old plan.
