Case was arraigned under n State warrant procured by Mr. Sheriff Shaw, before his Honor Rqnire Meacham, on Saturday evening last, under the follow ing circumstances : Some time since the effects claimed by Mr. C, including the safe and contents, were taken in charge by Mr. Shaw as sheriff, by civil legal process. In the safe' there were sixteen dollars in money l"Ionging ton young lad, who had given it to blr. C. for safe keeping. Mr. C. afterward represented to the aherifl' that that amount of money in the safe belonged to the lad, and that he (Case) was his guardian, etc., and requested the Bheriff to give It to him that he might hand it to the lioy. The sheriff at first refused, when Mr. C. aid to him: " Have you no confidence in me?" Mr. Shaw repliea, "not much," but finally being persuaded that he was prolwbly the authorized and proper custo dian of tlie amount, handed him the six teen dollars. The lad to whom the money belonged afterward complained that Case refused to give him his money, -whereupon Ihe sheriff procured the State warrant for his arrest, on the charge of getting the money on false pretences, by representing himself as the boy's guardian, the laddenying any such relationship. Under this warrant the accused was arrested on North College street. Meantime, however, Mr. C. had hoard of the procurement of the warrant and sent the sum to Mr. Louiseau, at the billiard rooms, for the boy. The case was before Require Meacham on Saturday, and was settled by Mr. C.'s paying over the sixteen dollars'and co3ls,and the attorney's fee. Thus the matter ended. These are the facts of the case, as furnished to us by parties cognizant of the affair. CONTRIBUTIOXS TO ST. MAKY's OltrHAN AsyM'M. The mcmbors of the Legisla ture, to their praise be it said, contributed most liberally, on yesterday, to the St. Ma ry's Orphan Asylum, two beautiful and christian young ladies being the .solicitors and recipients of the donations of the Le gislator. A Sap Heakt-Hirtoiiy A Young Lady Driven to Despair. Another one of those sad histories, opening wide the red leaved volume of the heart to the rude touch, and sting of all that's dark and sor rowful and hitter, lias just been unfolded lo the public's unsympathetic eye. About two weeks since, a young may 01 good connections and personal refinement came to this city, as she thought, lo con summate that felicity wliich ia the happiest episode in the lilc ol woman the unison other dojliny with that of h'm whose life and lortunc she had chosen to trust, nne came from the vicinity of Pontotoc, in the noble State of Mississippi. Tn that sunny region, amid the snowy ootton fields and "rustling cane," her affections budded, bloomed and ripened to maturity. Alas ! how unworthily bestowed I Sho formed the acquaintance of a Federal soldier, nnd gave to him all that wo man has to give her affeetions. He promised to make her his wife, and she Uiistingly believed. He came to this city, and the two kept up a cor respondence she in good faith. She was induced, also, to come here, expecting the full fruition of her long blossoming hopes. As staled, she reached here two weeks since, and atopped at one of our most re spectable hotels. She had little trouble in finding her supposed affiamt, but deep an guish when she found he was married and the head of a family. Her's was now a bankrupt soul ; her hopes had gone off in vapory phantoms, while her bright heart's dreams were realised in pale ashns on her lips. Wretched in hope, crushed in spirit, and far from friends, she gave herself up to despair. She remained at the hotel, still as the untuned strings of her broken heart, and silent as the smothered sighs of her troubled breast. Her enp was too full, and on laBl night about nine o'clock, she sent the landlord the following nute, full of twin, of woe and sadness: " My body will soon be buried beneath the waves of the Cumberland ; when I am gone you will please send a letter to Mr. John Davis, who lives eight miles from Pleasant Hill, Oass county, Missouri." Accompanying thisshcrt, sad note, there wore several miniatures, which she requested should be sent lo the same address. City Marshal Urantley was informed of the case, and he, with a friend, called on the lady. They found her in a state of distress bordering on madness. She stated that the Mr. Da vis referred to was her nnolc, and that she Itad a lirother living in Texas. Her man ner and actions .showed that she was snftering the very intensity of agony. She is of good appearance, well dressed, ami has refined manners. She was, it is Imped, diaanaded from perpetrating tlie raah act indicated In her note, though she declared she did not wish to live. She ex nroaaed a willingness to sro lo her brother in Texas, but declared she never wished to return to her home-lriends. This is another ad "history, similar to wlnali there have been a thousand told. She came here with love on her lips and her heart in her hand tlie love is withered to bloom no more : the heart is broken and its fragments are on the sand, never again to thrill or throb with a fom. emotion. Good paper is discounted on the 9treets at from 2 to 3 cents per month. Exchange on the Eastern cities is taken nt i discount, and is sold by the banks nt par. There is very little buying' and selling of uncurrent money going on at present. Bank of Tennessee notes are very dull at 45c(?-43c buying, and 5052c selling. This decline in the face of Judge Brien's decision, and of the decision of Judge Smith, of Memphis, is a little- remarkable, The decline we are told is owing to the prevalence of an opinion that the cases, on wliich these opinions were given, will not be determined during the present term of the Supreme Court,, but wijl be? held over until the next term. We do not know what ground there it for such an opinion, but the opinion does exist, and dealers nnd others are rather shy in buying. There has been 110 marked change in the leading features of our market since the date of our weekly review. Trade has been steady and prices generally firm, with an upward tendency, owing to the diminution of stocks consequent upon the partial sus pension of navigation. The demand for corn has been active, but the supply at no time has come up to the wants of the trade. Hence prices have ruled higher than was expected, and are still firm at our quota tions. Bacon has began to arrive, but there is not much demand, and sales have been chiefiv to supply the retail trade in the city. Our quotations .are for the article in store tlie buying price is less. In groceries there ha3 been a fair trade, and prices are firm at our quotations. Heavy additions have made to the stock of New Orleans sugar and molasses, relieving the pressure upon tho market, and Hbating the tendency to advance. Cotton'. The first three days of tbe week, closing last evening, there was an ac-' live demand, at prices ranging friiu2ito 20 e. The market was active, and the sales reached 370 bales at 25 to 29fu per" pound, a de cided advance in prices, xhis improve ment was cansed by an advance and large sales in Liverpool. Boatsmen are nnxious to get away. Weatherwise parties predict this kind of of feather till March. The Louisville (hurieeat yesterday says : On the falls, last evening, there were three feet nine inches water iu the pass, down the Indian chute, and falling, with considerable ice in the river. The barometer was steadily risini: yes terday, but in the evening it appeared tobe inclined to tall, though going down slowly. A weatherwise propnet, however, an ice Icaler, has predicted that the hardest or colden weather of the winter will be be tween the 20 and 30th of the month. We are' glad he does- not postpone it till next month, as It will now goon be over. The river at Cincinnati at noon yester day had risen a few inches in the previous twenty-tour nonrs. The Clifton, Capt. Stein, came in from Cincinnati yesterday morninxr, and has aid up at the city wharf. She left Cincin nati Saturday eveninz, and had a pretty rough time working her way through the ice; though uninsured. The ice was the heaviest at the head of six mile island.
