A eflrr&HponflentorthcP"ainc Farmer jjlvjhtti oxperioriBO upon a subject that Imn boon (l'MWHiswd in thm dopnrtment He 8ys: Far. thirty yeara I have practiced a rota tion in funning which to me is good, J Hit two years in grain, and two year in Hp&k "My graxs need is mixed, twf iartj innotliv ami one iart clover, and 1 sow mie teck to the acre. Tiiis is a good pro imrtion for linlli mradow andnuture: it will keep down ' the weeds better ihanlaifp other conree that I have seen or practiced. Turn' ever the wd at two year old-; to lie longer, in some places, the grans geU out and weeds or something else gets in, to the injury of the other crop or working of the land. The second ensin oropls tho host time far the grass seed to crow, for then it has the full benefit of the decomposed sod. Corn is, f think, the bet crop on the sod, whore the'land is suitable, for corn is more easily attended and is less troubled with weeds ; other crops are grown as circumstances direct. In the beginning of my experience in rotation, I tried with the two years' course one field for fifteen years without manure; at the end of the time it was worth twice as much for fanning rmqq9ip, as when I be gan, and to-day 1 think as well of it, oY better, than ever. I keep an much stock as will eat up all the hay and pasture and work up all the straw, and return the whole to the farm in manure. ' ' !ultivatloii ofllie Jiti-.Tiwltcrry. Among the smaller fruits ,the straw harry is the surest and most productive, aiid'te parties who live ae'cbsYiblo i to' n market, it cannot fail to be romnnera five, if properly cultivated. 'The utraw borry requires rich clean laud; (hero is very little use in planting them in soil that is stocked with grass and weeds. Mr. A. M. Purdyof South Bond, Imi, who is an extensive grower of tho straw berry, has adopted the opinion that rais ing in hills is most profitable, while the crop is much larger nnd the berries finer. He says: We have .heretofore Mrngly"advo8aled the matted row system, but after careful and practical comparison, wo are satisfied that the hill method is the best, one year after another. The fruit average double the site the crop double, and, on most irfrlis with lees labor. In hills they form such strong, bushy tops, that the frnit and LIos wm are prelected from severe late spring fronts. Last spring we had r. late frost in May, that nearly ruined our plantations that grew in matted rows, while those grown in hills were but slightly damaged, and yielded a vory heavy crop. Another reason is. that the heavy tops mat down around the crown in tho winter, and protect it from the action of the frost, while the grown in the matted row form but small tops and are not thus protected. Again, if the ground should be weedy, they are attended to with much less work and care than if allowed to throw out runners. The work can nearly all be done with the hee and cultivator, while if in matted tows iUhas to bo done with the fingers, which is very laborious indeed. lie adds, that the only case in which the matted row method is admissible, is where the laud is quite free from weeds and is not liaWc to severe frost in wintor or spring, and while all varieties will do better grown in hills, some will not succeed in any other way. As soon ks the hills are through 'bear ing, rotted manure orcomiKMt is plowed or spaded deep between the rows, and in addition to cutting off all the runners that are starting, the entire topof the plant Is taken off close to the crown. This is deem ed very essential preventing tho plant fram remaining in a doromnt state for weekn, and causing new roots to be thrown out immediately, and making a largo mass of atool by autumn. The matted or alter nate row system here formally praetioed, was described in some of our former vol umes, and aanaists in keeping the rows clean after they are set otft, and training the runuers alon$ the row o that they ulti mately form a thick mass in a strip about' a footer a feet and half, wide. Rotted ma nure is scattered among them before free 1ug, and they are worked and cultivated with ?he ferk in the spring. After fruitiag, these rows are aain drwsed down to about wx inches iu width, and treated as before for another year' hearing ; or else.they are al lowed to fill wfch new plants the space be tween the rows, after which the old rows are plowed or shaded in succession of new plants being tbs ofetaitMnl without the labor of setting out by hand. When the plants are placed in hills at pial distances each wav, the runners may be cut off at little or no cost bv means of a sharp wheel attached to thaoiltivatar. A nlbst 'perfect mode, boweror, ts iVwilie work by hand with sheep-shears by the oise of which a ready and practiced man will go ever frew one to two acres a day.
