Chaplin, of Omaha, ebraskj, giveH his experience with the potnto bpeuo 1 as follows : " Plant those kind of pot"V toea which make large tops, such as the Peach Blow or what we call the Cali fornia potato; then plant through tlie patch a few rows of N'cshannocks. The beetle will not eat tho rank-growing vines as long as the Neshannocks last, and is much easier to gather them from a few rows, than to go each time over a largo patoh." This suggestion is worth atritil, as it will cost nothing.' To hare dia covered our enemy's weakness or partiali ty for some tender variety, is to Hayi' gained the ' coigne of vantage over" him. Apple orchards left, to themselves bear only on alternate years, with such uni formity, Hint " bearing years" have come to be regarded as the order of nature, rather than a human device-, The trees, in average soil, do not have aliment enough to give full crops every year, Cultivation and manuring will change all this, says the American Agriculturist, and give us remunerative crops every season. Possibly manuring might do this even if the orchard were left in grass. Hut the duntrer -is. if the orchard it left nnplowed, it will not get the manure. The common objection offered to plow ing is the damtiee done to the roots of the trees. We hove no doiibt that an orchard iniidht be plowed so deep and so near the trnnk of the trees as to damage it past hope of recovery. Jftut discretion is to bo used, and the plow is to be kept so near the surface under the trees as not to break off the largo roots. H has also been ascertained that grain crops arc not good for orchards AVe have known orchards to be made barren for several years in consequonce of a crpp of rye. Grain crops4 unless buckwheat be an exception, takes from the sil what the tree needs, and shade the land too much. Hoot crops are the most desirable, be cause they require a good deal of manure and thorough tillage to make them profit able. The frequent stirring of the soil, and the fertiliiers, are the wants of tho apple tree, and the root crop enables the farmer to give these to his orchard, und at the same time he is remunerated for his labor. Potatoes, carrot, beets, turnip, are all good crops for the orchard, if you put on manure enough to make them pay. A surplus must be loft-in the soil to make the opple crop. But will an orchard thus fed bear every year ? We have ne doubt of it, Tho apple crop may be inn le as sure as the root crops. Wc once plowed up beneath an old apple tree that had an inveterate habit of boaring only tivery .other year, and planted with, polatocs, manuring liberally We hail a full crop of apples the secondyoar, and shall always think the manure and the cultivation mad the chante. Horticulturists who moke a specialty of apples, and manure erory j ear, succeed in getting crop every season, with vary rare exceptions. David Lymau, Ksq ,of Mlddlefield, Conn "stated at'a meeting ot the State Board of Agri- culture, that he cultivated his orchards, Mil ana got crops every year lliey were not always full crops, but were enough to jay for the trouble Judging from the appearance of his orclmrdi, which we visited a few jrftra tuMt in tho apple sMison, wo thiuk thatz vary mediMt state ment.
