Forced as we have been to rely on our home talent, we have cultivated in our midst a troupe of singers, some of whom might dispute the laurels of the world's greatest song birds. Music and intelligence are twin graces, and always betoken the highest state of refinement and civilization. Nashville has never been without a considerable, amount or musical talent, but it has always ueeded organization and severe discipline to make it available to the public. The Mendelssohn bociety is a real hene ractor to our city. It has already intro duced to the public, voices whose wondrous melody has enraptured large audiences, which had never been heard before outside of the private parlor. A great many lovera of music attetided the concert, with the expectation of hearing simple pieces, im provised for the occasion- ,1. hey were satis fied before the performance was over, that the most laborious cultivation and long training were necessary to attain the high order of skill exhibited by the troupe. To those who have seen the grace, and almost divine touch of Miss Fitzhugh it is unne cessary to say a word of commendation. The very genius of Mendelssohn seemed to touch her Fingers and draw from the piano keys, notes now grand as ocean's roar, then soft as the shell symphony from the corsl reefs of the mermaid's home. The solo from the Rose of Castile "I'm but a simple peasant maid," was mpst charmingly sung by Miss S- . If the spirits of the grand old masters could have hovered over that entranced audience, they would have placed the corona wuaicale on her brow. When the enthusiastic audience meoretl, she came back and sang that sweet little Scotch ballad, "In a Mile of Edin boro" Town," which made the vast audi tory almost frantic with delight. Miss B has a well cultivated voice, and sang with much spirit that benutihil strain from Bellini "As I View these Scenes so Charming." The auditory showed their appreciation of this piece, by a profound silence while it was being played and an enthusiastic demonstration when it closed. "As the Hart Pants," which U the 42d psalm, set to music by Mendelssohn, thirty three voices were united, and snch a wave or 6acred melody has never before been heard in Nashville. . The recitations and choruses were well executed and gave great delight to the ex cited and'appreciativc listeners. ' It is impossible to allude particularly to all the fine voices, both male aid female, as in the rich choral swell it was impossible to distinguish one voice from another, there was such a perfect accord. We trust that this society will again favor the citizens of Nashville with another concert - ' DIED: Ob the muruiut of the 14th lust., Mrs. Lczettk Bbie.i, wife of Oarl D.
