"Value or CSrnNA I.iukIs Ilest Time to No3rns Senl. A oorrosiondent of tho New York Trf buiie mys: "Thehme has not yet ooinc when farmers appreciate as they should the value oi grass., hvery year dairy products are beeoniing dearer, be jaunath(i grass region i limited, and only a few years will be reqired to give any farm natural for grass a value which naw would be thought excessive. If I wished to buy a farm for my posterity, whioh would oontinuaJly increase in value), I certainly should choose it in the rtMfien of eratw. For 1 do know that in the course of one's life, a gniFg farm, will bring more money and comfort and with loss work than other farms, whether on the ticiota. Wabash, or the Missis sippi bottoms, nor onn a farm of equal value be selected and made anywhere within the belt formed by the tropica, the whole world around. The following bit of experience contrib uled to the Boston CSdtiwtor, will be found very unoful to grass growers 1 have an impression that experimental knowledge is the most valuable lor the Par- inor. For more than half a century I Lave been experimenting to find the best time to how crass seed. 1-or more than thirty oi the first years of my farming, 1 did aa my neighbors uut; we supposed that the spring months were the only liroper ones for that purpose. But later in life, by reading ag ricultural iapers, I discovered that some eiiternriHinir farmers wore successiul m rawing their grass seed in August and Sep tember. 1 tried the experiment with coin- pletemiccusH; that being the season it would naturally full, it appeared evident to my mind that it was the right one. But still later I have not been particular, and have sowed crass seed at any season when my ground was prepared to receive it, and if the seed was good it was unilormly vegeta ted and done well. Lat fall (my son and myself) after har vesting our potatoes from the low, wet soil, which would not admit ot seeding down in early spring, sowed herd crass, and red-top seed on 1-ltli and 15th of October upon said IHitato field, doubting, but still hoping for the best; and now the Sth of July, it bids lair to give us the best crop ol nay pro duoed on any of my farm lots. This grass probably will require two weeks longer to urow than that which has been seeded down longer. I think I never saw seed veiretate at any eoason. Grass seed will vegetate a long time after being powed. In the spring of 18G2, 1 seeded down a lot of good ground, but rather dry, with red-top seed ; the months of June and July wero uncommonly dry. and at the middle of August there was no appearance of a grass sprout on the piece. On the HWi of August, lf.e Ra.no vr it Wan to rain tiroriisolv the same year it began to rain proiuscn anu coniiuueu raining lor several weeK till the ground was saturated, in beptein ber, more than four months after the seed was sown, every seed seemed to vegetate, and the ground appeared like a beautiful lawn. And on the whole I have concluded that at anv time when our land is in a good state of preparation to receive the peed, is the best time to sow it TuoroitKti Culture. The time to comnionce plowing for fall nrona will soon he unon us. and a few thoughts on the subject of thorough cul turo will be verv annronriate at this time. In Europo, sub-soiling and trench inginro largely engaged in. Why ia this ? It is so from necessity! Land is culti vated in parcels of but few ncree to a -man, aDd inueh is to be gotten from it, and tins mueh ia depended upon, awl hardly ever insets with a disftpiintraent. "Why not moet with disappointment? Simply because thohouoh tillage is the rule the necessity. It ia not so hero and h ore It is whore we often meet with failure. A deeply cultivated soil, soya the 7i'm ral World, has advantages which no other soil has and they are important advuntagos. Deep culture brings the moisture up from the gmt fountain (the Hndor soil) which is always moist .It does it invariably by oapillnry attraction; but only whon tho upper soil is deprived fits moisture. When this is wet, the meisraro invariably finds its way down, net by oapillary attraction, bat by its own weight and it passes o(T, except what is wanted : thalh retained by tho attraction of tho soil, and is no more than ie needed fortlie benefit of tho land and the crop to be grown upon it The deeper the BjV ia pulverized, tho more meisture (in a drouth) will be brought up, and tho more readily will tho superabundance of rain disappear. Such a soil can never be made wet, permanent ly. The groateat rains disappear as they fall, loaving tho ground cetnparatively dry. Deep tUlago, then, isseourlty against excessive moisture an evil which occurs every yeari and, on the othior liand iagainstwdrouihwhioli"!U8ntillyaooourS! 1 lUt," deejt 1&ac dbts oi: if ifuropc. where the soil Jim .ib&on, .cultivated frj many centuries, ndvantago-i3 still takeni of the original stuVsoil, whioli dnderlies tho ordinary cultivated greund. This is brought up from below, where there is good dopHi of it, as would be on cur prairie kids and mndo ttse of. One of our greatest politicians, who is also a goud farmer, says tho best farraiug he ever say was in Belgium, whoro much of the land is trenoh8d,tq,tho dqpth of three feet and the results arc such as warrant the outlay or the labor. He says the rioh man of our country oan afford to farm on the surfaae, but the poor man ny noir uaoauso there is more advantage even here in this oountry to ferm thoroughly, than to do the thing as it is generally done. What wo have said are not new facts, save to a few wh read but little, or heed lessfjr. But they are foots that should be kept in view constantly ; for this is what the farmer mutt keep before him perpet ually if he would dn it The temptation we know is great in the West to large farms ; it is almost impossible to take but a few aeros and work them in a thorough ly scientific manner. Yet it would pay perhaps less so than the older portions of the country, or in Europe but still pay. It might be a check to ambition But is this a harm ? Certainly ndt, if there is no los.o. rore. Deep tillage certainty makes a bod for the roots that penetrate. They will feel the quickened advantages and respond at onco and through the whole season. 1 lie soil once thoroughly stirred (to a great depth,) it will remain, in that condition, moro or less, for a great length of time, passing beyond the life of a man for this same soil has lain for thousands of yefttti Stir up and get tho good which it oon tains; it is yours to get Get it thon, and bogin with a little less land.
