' i vjrrr Manuring Fruit TrccN, The Horticulturist says : Too many, in applying manure to their fruit trees, ' forget Che position of tho roots and apply within-ti foot or eo of the body. 'If they wore carefully to remove the soil, they would find that trees of vigorous growth, and from soven to ten feet high, have roots that are really tho nain sources of nourishment, varying from six to ten feet from the body. The application of ma nure, therefore, to give the boat results, should bo. distributed around the tree, at a distance of from five to eight foot from' the trunk. In positions whero the turf is desired to be maintained, cut and roll it back, put on the manure, fork it in "lightly, and then replace the turf. l'ropairntiuff Blackberries. Tho blackberry propagating itself by . suokersr and if theffe are takon up in au turn or oarly in spring, cut back and set out for growing another reason, thoy will mako woll rooted plants by autumn. Another mode is to cut off the roots, by means of a long sharp spade, around the growing plants in spring, to induce the formation of suckers. This outtingihbuld be done a few inchos from the main plant in circular foxm, and ropcatod again a few inchos further out, so that the young plants may not have long, one sided Toote. A third mode is to koop up cutting tho roots in autumn or oarly spring, say three or four inohos long and as a quill, or largor, and sot them out in apen ground in an upright position, leaving the top a little below tho surface. If the soil is rieh and "mellow thoy will do well. A ftfBrtl 1 arid (ho boat niode, when practi cable, is to use cuttings with bottomjheat; thoy. need not bo moro than an idh or tw6'lflng, and should oither have thoheat of a; hot? bod, or a propagating house. Thoy should bo takon up in autumn, so as to bo started vory oarly in spring. In tho early part or by tho middle of 'sum mer, they will do to sot in open ground, and will make good plants tho same, sea son Uy this mode there will aoarcoly bo a failure Tho soil for those bottom heat cuttings, should bo a mixture of about two-thirds of clean sand thoroughly mixed with one-third of leaf-mold, w?Hh a portion of finely diffused old manure. RnlNlnfr Seed. Tho Cincinnati Bnqxilrer makes tho following suggestions : Acting on the principle that every farm should produce, as far as possible, all that ia required for use upon it, wo advise farmers'to pay more attention to raising seeds. There will always be some which it will be jnecessary perhaps to purchase, and there arc many of which changes will prtxluce a good eflect ; but far the greater part of the seeds wanted by the common farmer may be as well produced by himself as by another. Some little care and atten tion is. however, necessary, else, however good the seeds may be, bo far as germina" Hon is concerned, the plants produced way not be of the .kind desired or expected. Nearly all are u'vraro that when plants are so situated that the pollen or fecun dating dust of thfejjlossom of one variety is conveyed tBe"Bower of another variety of the same species, a cross will be tb$ re sult, and the new vegetable or plant will be a hybrid, having a mixture of Inequal ities of both, perhaps, but unlike either. It is owing to this easily understood cause that the seeds of the apple, peach, cherry, potato, and other fruits and plants, so rare ly, produce tree or plants like the original ones. It is this disposition to mix which is te be guarded against, and a few simple rules will enable any farmer to do this effectually. Beets are a plant frequently injured by planting different kinds for seed near each other. Thus, the red and white will pro duce ulants neither red nor white, and frc2 quentiy of an inferior quality. Radishes of different kinds should never . .be planted near each other when intended for seed. Nothing shows the effect of "anialgama tioniLouicker than th&planting of squashes anoWparafklns near oaoh other. The sqh'efllll be nrtsskspea and watery, anaTtfrefpiimpklnB wateiytmaliard -skinned, and destitute of the aweetne belongiag to the pure article. Nearly the same deteriorating results en sue from plantiag gourds in the victnilr of squashes. The shell of the gourd w in jured, and the squashes are rendered bitter and unpalatable. Corn of the several kinds cannot be pre served in purity, if planted where the dust of the blossoms of one kind cornea la con tact readily with the silks of another Cabbages of different varieties areprery wreit&oroea withth other when planted together, producing plants like neither of the original kinds. OuegX most kSTj ' uinjurresrestilUngfromhiB tendency w found to arise when cabbages and turnips intended for seed arc planted near (each other. . The cabbages produced from such seed' will not head well, and the turnips, Instead of ' fine round bulbs with ;mall tufts of leaves, will.be surmounted with it cabbage-liko stem, an immense quantity ,of leaves, and the roots themselves jviU bo (more or lees tough and woody in' jtkelr - (structure. 1 . By a little attention to the above sugges tions, this difficulty might be avoided, and good seeds-grown by everyone. The moat perfect plants should always be selected for planting out for seed ; and where this is done, and a mixture with other kinds is avoided, a change for the worse need not be feared.
