The great Northwest baa been enriched by its trade with the South since the war. The failure in tbe cereal crops of the South for two years past, gave tbe Northwest a fine market for their corn and bacon. Tbis tide,'which has been so heavy against us, baa now turned northward. Providence has given the afllicted South tbe "early and the latter rain, and her Ileitis now smile with a plenteous harvest. About a month ago Recorder Foster had Mr. S. G. Wood, late n grocery mcrohant on Union street, arrested for doing busman without a liconse. The delinquent waa brought before him, and was fined the usual penalty of "fifty dollars-and costs." In tke considera tion of the tightnowaf times, the Recorder agreed that if the amount of the license should be paid by a certain day, which was specified, lie would remit the fine, upon payment of costs the remission of the line being contingent on the payment of the license tax, and in the meantime, tbe fine to stand against the defendant. Before the day agreed upon for the pay ment of the license, Mr. Wood took the initiatory steps towards availing bimpelf of the bankrupt law, including tjie corpo ration as one of bis creditors, of which the Recorder received due notice. The Re corder believing that fines imposed by way of penalties could not be liquidated by pro ceedings in bankruptcy, bad Mr. Wood ar rested yesterday, lie pleaded the defense of bankruptcy," which was overruled, and in default of myment of the fine he was ordered to the workhouse. Mr. Wood sub sequently applied for a writ of habeas cor pus, which was granted by Judge Smith, of the Criminal Court, and the case is set down for hcaringthis afternoon at 5 o'clock. The jSew York Journal of Commerce of the afternoon of the 6th inst. says : " The money market is moderately active, but there appears to be no essential diminution in the amount of surplus capital offering, and borrowers find ho difficulty in sud plying their wants at 45 per cent, for call loans on stock collaterals, and at 3 per cent, upon government securities. First class business paper at short date is readily placed at G7 per cent, per annum dis count." The receipts of specie at New York from Lalitornia from January 1st to AugiBt 31st, amount to $19,956,374, and from loreign ports to 52,153,546, making the total receipts 22,109.920. The exports of 'specie to," foreign , ports? during theame time amount to 3y,H3U,150, showing a loss since January 1st of $17,720,230. The amount of specie held by the bankd in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia at their reports dated nearest the 1st inst., amounted to $7,879,933. Two years ago the banks in New York beld more than double tbis amount. Our latest mail dates from Cincinnati report the flour and wheat markets as fol lows: Superfine is scarce, and would readily sell at S3 258 50. Extra is difficult to buy under $9 40, and choice brands brine S9 75. Family sells readily at $10fjd 10 25 ; but there is not much that can be obtained at the inside price, and choice brands bring $10 50. Fancy white wheat Hour is held at S10 75(Hlll 76. The market for wheat was a shade firmer, in sympathy with flour, and sales were more readily made at yesterday's prices, but no advance was established. No. 1 winter red sold at $2 142 15 ; No, 2 do at $2 OS 1U, and some lots, by single, at S2 12. which were thought to be equal to No. 1. Where wheat is held in elevator, holders are not offering it below $2 152 18 for No.l. Prime bill wheat sold at $2 15. White wheat continues quiet but steady, at $2 252 23 for No. 1, and $2 152 20 lor No. 2. Our table show the receipts of cotton of last year's crop to be 1,869,284 bale. There are a few points from .which returns have not been received up to the close of the cotton year. These will nrobablv bring the total receipts up to 1,871,000 bales. A good deal of this was beld over from the previous year, but the crop has turned out much larger than was estimated during the summer and fall of 1866. The crop of the present year is estimated at from 2,000,000 to 2,500,000 bales. The stocks of cotton held in the various South. em ports are much less than any cotton year has opened with in a quarter of a cen tury. The stocks in the Southern porlson tbe 1st inst. amounted to only about 24, 500 bales, and there was about 5500 beld in interior towns. There is considerably more in the interior, and we have no means of knowing bow much. Last year at the same points the stocks amounted to about 173,000 bales, or about 142,000 more than the present year. These facts show bow the cotton planters have been pressed. It U to be hoped the present year will be easier upon them. The receipts of cotton at New Orleans up to the 7th inst. amount ed to 1327 bales, and at Mobile to 9S2 bales. A careful count shows the stock of cotton held in Nashville on the let inst. to be 522 bales, which was nearly 200 bales larger than had been previously supposed. The receipts since have amounted to nearly 100 bales. GENERAL MARKETS. NAsnviLLE, Sept. 10. There baa been a fair trade in all branches of business during the past week, except in cotton. We are glad to note that we are now sending large quantities of corn and flour to the Northern markets. and at such'prices as are very remunerative to our producers. It looks very much like reversing the old order of things, for our merchants to be getting orders for grain and flour tosnpply the empty-granaries of thelSorthwest. - -"..
