Frem the New YerkMbune, Mb, A friend lately urged us to visit him in New Haven, Conn., prominlng Us a. night that would reward the (rouble. We went bo soon as practicable, and were taken bj him to a building in which some scores of men and women were making fish-hooknof various sixes inven(ed by Dr. C. O. Crosby of that city. Into each of these machines wire of a given size was rapidly passing from a reel, fashioned somewhat like the "swifts" of our Yankee grandmothers, and being automatically cut into the re quisite lengths, bent, flattened at one end, sharpened to a point at the other, bearded, and dropped into a hex under the machine, needing only to be tempered to make (hem as perfect, efficient fish-hooks as were ever seen a single workman thus making sixty thousand fish-hooks in a day of ten hours. We said he makes them, but (hat is inac curate; be supplies the wire and then looks on while the machine makes them without a fault or a possibility of defect, as fast as shingle nails can be made, and equal to any cvor used. That they are cheaper than any other need hardly be added. Hitherto, we Americans have fished 'with British-made hooks; but that day is over. The European hooks have till now been made by hand sl&wly, clumsily, expensively; they will hence forth be made on Dr. Crosby's machine ; but we trust thore is sufficient patriotism in the inventor to reserve the American market for American-made hooks. They cannot cost half what we have heretofore paid our friends abroad for a poorer article. We read recently an account in The Working Man (British) an account of the fish-hook manufacture in England, which seems, in the light of what we saw hi New Haven, the description of some antedelu vian process, invented by Tubal-Cain, Tha wire is first cut by shears; then heated ; thon rubbed ; then bearded ; then pointed by filing; then bent; then shanked; then scoured; then blued or japanned; when they are ready (0 be counted, papered and labeled. Each of (his is a distinct manual process ; and the aggregate cost (not in cluding the material; must be (en times (hat of making by the automatic Crosby process. A " Fkbak of Nature." A brief par agraph under the above head has olioited the following from a correspondent, who writes from Amite City, under date of Soptcmbor 'M : About the year 1880 1 became acquaint ed wi(h an aunt of my wife, who was then upwards of ninety years of age, and dined with her at tho house of hereon, who was born when his mother was sixty years old, and who was fifteen years younger than his next youngest brother or Bister. This old lady was the wife of a Mr. Adair, of South Carolina, whose name is honorably mentioned more than one time in the history of the revolutionary war, and when I met her in Alabama she had regained her eyesight, and did, in my house, make herself a fine muslin cap with out the aid of glasses. Soon after this period she concluded that the return of sight was a warning that she was not long for this world, conse quently she returned to Carolina (o be buried by her husband, bu( after a stay of four years she concluded that she was mis taken, and returned to Alabama, having four new and full grown teeth in front, two above and two below. My wife and myself have raised nine children, and have lived to see the youngest (a daughter) mar ried. We arc both in good health, and I now have seven more years to wai(, hoping that she may imitate her exratordinary aunt by presenting me with a fine son to repair in part the loss of our two sons in the Con federate army. AT. O. Time, Gih. IIONXETS. The fashion journals inform its that the mantilla fanchon is the favorite model at present. It is a fanchon with a sort of veil falling over the neck, and continued in lanpets which arc fastoned in front over the bosom-with a brooeh or flower, and which is called the mantilla veil. It is made of crape or lulle, bordered with lace. Garlands of bronnc, golden brown, or coppor-colored metalic foliage arc very much in vogue for straw, crepe or tulle bonnets; also silver gray or variegated fo liage, mixed with small harries, (iny bunches of grapes or acorns. Brown straw hate are bound at the edge with narrow gilt metal bands, and have gilt oars of corn and grasshoppers either in front or at one side, with brown veils behind tied beneath (he chignon. Flowers in bonnets arc now fastened in the same position, and if there are splays, a single spray falls on the shoulder. The femdtm a duuleme is a novel and protty style of bonnet ; the shape rises both at the front and back, so as to form a diademe, which is covered with a garland of leaves; the tulle which forms the string crosses the bonnet. The fashion veils are round in front, and have two lappets, whieh are tied at the back of the head, in the centre of the chig non. These veils are made in white lace and in colored crepe and tulle, and alee in black tulle, bordered with lace edging. They are worn almost tight over the faee. A GOOD" CHANCE FOR THE :UNI3III.OTEI.
