NO SCARCITY
OF FLOUR HERE
Nervous People Become Un
easy Over Rumors Regard
ing Flour Conditions.
Some persons of a nerious tempera
ment have of late become somewhat un
easy over rumors that there would soon
be a great scarcity of flour and other
mill products, and that prices would be
come almost prohibitive. It was also
alleged that owing to this prospective
scarcity the government had put a lim
ited embargo on the mills in their dis
trlbutlon of such commodities. Atten
tion of one of the mlllmen was called to
this report Monday morning, and it wu
learned that the rumor waa without any
tangible reasons for Its circulation. It
was learned that the mills were greatly
annoyed at times by consumers calling
up by telephone and maklnr inquiries
as to the true status of the flour market.
The government has made no new rul
ing regarding the distribution of flour,
except that only two grades must be
made, via.! 100 pur ceut. and 95 per cent,
quality. Art order has been observed
for soma time limiting the aalos to re
tailers to estimated supplies of thirty
days. Thjs was dona to prevent hoard
ing of supplies by retailers. The mills
have observed Vhls ruling to the letter
as far as possible.
At the piesent time it does not look
ss though there was to be a scarcity of
flour, and If It does occur it will not be
sooner than sixty days, and possibly not
then.
There has been a decline In the price
of flour at both the merchant mills of
about 20fn40 on Is on the barrel, on a
basis of 24-pound sacks, each grade.
Hungarian Purity can be purchased at
$11.40, a fall of 20 cents from $11.60.
Plain flour, first grade. 100 per cent,
quality, $11.20. formerly $11.60; same, 9$
por cent. quaNty, $11.40.
Self-rising, first quality, $11.60; second
quality, $11.40.
Matchless self-rising, per barrel, $11.60.
Meal has advanced to $1.7$ at both
mills.
In grain and feedstuffs mixed oats has
advanced from 78 cents to $1.
Cottonseed meal has declined from
$2.75 to $2.65, and straws advanced from
70 cents to 75 cents per 100.
V. C. Wheeler & Co., dealers In grain
and feedstuffs, says the larger portion of
the goods handled by that company is
brought in by wagons and other private
conveyances. An explanation of the fluc
tuation is given as being caused by scar
city of labor and bad condition of roads.
fir. Whoelcr says when the thaw comes
of the present freeze wagons will sink
Into mud up to their hubs, except where
there are good pikes, and that when the
crisis comes it will be almost Impossible
for conveyances to ajet into the city. This
will necessitate further rise In prices.
The only change noted In the hides,
wool, roots quotations is that green salt
ed' hides have fallen in price to 13i&14o
the pound.
Eggs, strictly fresh, are quoted In the
wholesale market at 60 oents per dozen,
an advance of 8 cents.
Irish potatoes have fallen In price from
$1.60 to $1.50 per bushel.
In the Markethouse.
There are very few changes noted In
the markethouse quotations. New po
tatoes from Florida have made their ap
pearance, and are sold at 15&20 cents
a quart.
Sweet potatoes have advanced 10 cents

MEASLES.
Many people still believe In allowing
children to be exposed to measies in or
der that they may have It "fer with"
while young, because they "must have It
sooner or later." These same people still
i believe there Is no danger either In hav
ing measles or of complications follow
ing it.
The dth rate from measles in chil
dren up to 5 years old la as high as
scarlet fever, smallpox or any of the
contagious diseases. The complications
are numerous, especially the develop
ment of pneumonia and tuberculosis. One
attack Jensens the chances of having' It
again, but a person can have measles
several times. It Is more common In
children because they come In contact
with It more In schools, playing, etc. In
camps of adults measles are common.
Unfortunately, the period of greatest
contagion is before the eruption cornea
out or during the stage of sore eyes,
running nose, couuh, sore throat and fe
ver. By discovering measles early and
isolating the cases It can be prevented
from spreading, so It Is not necessary to
have it. . Unfortunately, however, It la
not diagnosed until the eruption comes.
By that time the child has spread lta
Infected nose and mouth secretions to
others, either direct or through tho ,use
of common things. iv
Most cities require measles to be re-
ported and Isolated. It Is required In
cantonment areas, so see that cases are
reported and put Into separate rooms.
Do not allow others to come into contact
with that case.
