"What d'ye know about these pants?" -hay, it would take a provost guard to put me tn these here leggins.", "I guess I'll look like a soldier when It gets dark." Rookies of Company O, quarantine camp, received their uniforms Tues' day morning. With favorable wind and weather they hope to be in them by Friday or Saturday. Trousers and leggins are the greatest stumbling blocks. The boys are not accustomed to laced-up trousers. They seem too tight, too long, too short. And as for leggins. th average rookie spends bad half lour with his leggins before ne geis inem on. All over the detention camp Tuesday morning a listener could hear through the tent walls rough language, ad dressed to new clothing. Uncle Sam Issued to each of his nephews a big blue bag containing two shirts, two pairs of shoes, trousers, an overcoat, overalls, underwear and socks. It requires a newly enlisted man about two weeks to get over being unl form shy. When the boys got on their new clothes, they stayed in their tents trying to get used to themselves. When they were at Inst called forth for mess, they came forth grinning and embarrassed. Army shoes come In for particular anathema. They are invariably too large. A rooklo who had been a dry goods clerk mashed down about three Inches of unoccupied toe room. "It's Just like moving Into unfurnished apartments.", he complained pathet ically. After his first ten-mile hike, whefi his feet swell up, he won't have so much bunker capacity. Td add to their discomfiture. Just at this time the boys all have sore arms typhoid and smallpox vaccinations. Every day the rookies line up before the Infirmary awaiting their "shots." About J or 4 per cent, of 'them faint while waiting in line. The sight of the needle continually Jabbing Into the soft arms gets 'em. Nobody Is "guyed" for fainting. In fact, the whole company is lined up right on the fringe of the fainting point. They are very matter-of-fact about their fainting. A man's face gets very white. He sits down, then he lies down, looking gray as a corpse. Nobody makes a move to help him. He doesn't need help. He'll be all right in five or ten minutes In time to walk up and take his "shot." Rev. Luther Bridgerg Preaches Sermon on "Improving Your Opportunities." Another large congregation heard Rev. Luther B. Bridgers, the southern evangelist who Is conducting a series or . revival services at Centenary cnurcn; i uesaay ntgnt. In his prayer the evangelist prayed for the success of the third liberty Dona campaign. He said: "Oh, Lord. help us to pray and pay. Let's serve and sympathize." He said that in this iour- at all ance Is merely the psychological reac tion of American nerves. Once they get ' their "shot" the rookies stand swinging their arms vigorously In or der to keep them from being sore. The First Christian church was well filled last night with an interested audi ence In attendance on the Hlll-Hohgatt meeting now In progress. The congrega tions are attracted to the Church by the splendid singing of a large chorus choir conducted by Prof. Hohgatt, ns wl"l as by Dr. Hill's preaching. A thirty-minute song service precedes the sermon. Prof. Hohgatt has assembled and trained one of the best chorus choirs ever heard In this city. The music is Inspiring. The sermon wss based on Jesus' word , to Nloodcmus: "Except a man be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of clod." This text, said the preacher, sweeps away all argument In favor of universal salvation. Salvation Is uni versal only In, the sense that Jesua Christ Is universally accepted snd obeyed. Jesus Christ Is the law of Ood for the spiritual world. We are saved as we conform to Him Just ss we are ' saved physlcslly when we conform to natural laws. All of us enter this life bx the gstewsy of birth. We enter the spiritual life by the gsteway of spiritual birth. Why does Christ call conversion a birth? Why does he use this figure to set out this experience? It mesns the entrance of a new man Into a new world. There is no going back over the road no living life over again. You cannot become a rhlld again In years or stature, but, thank Ood, you can begin over again In llfo and character. The blood of Christ washes away sin. It Is the only way. The way to the cross is the way to a fresh atsrt. Many a man has said, ,"If I could Just have another chance." All men may have another chance and a chance with a mighty Helper to help you. fording them the opportunity to accoDt Jiim or reject iilm. In meetings like these Jesua comes to some on the roadside, to others He comes in the homes and in places of business or In secret places when none but God sees and hears. The whole destiny of life depends on the decision made when He does come and offer you this great opportunity. "If." said the speaker, "the Holy wpint speaks to you. let me plead with I you not to reject Him. The warning may not come again." The preacher made an earnest an- peal and, In answer to this, a number went forward for prayers. Old Folks Services. ' The services for old folks Thursday morning is going to be the outstand ing feature of this series, and plans are being made by the church for a large attendance. This service is to be held Thursday morning between 11 and 12 o'clock. Regardless of church afnliations, everyone is Invited to at tend. Tho sermon will be on the sub ject of "Old Days," and the songs will be those old-time revival hymns which were so much enjoyed by the older people in their younger days at the little old church which they attended with their fathers and mothers way out, msyhe, tn' the countryside.
