LAWRENCE BIG STAR IN "OLD HOMESTEAD" With all due respects to other mem bers of the cast of characters which took part in "The Old Homestead Tuesday night at the Lyric theater, William Lawrence, by whom the play la staged, and who takes the part of Joshua Whltcomh, Is practically tne whole show. For without his Jolly laugh and splendid acting the play wouldn't have been the same. No other person could have taken the part any better than did William Lawrence. When he laughs, he laughs all over, and makes everyone In the audience laugh, and when he gets out (that big red, bandana handerchlef and one, he makes those in the audience cry with him. In the second act Uncle Joshua's Islt to the fashionable Fifth avenue residents of Henry Hopkins, an did boyhood acquaintance, keeps the dlence In an uproar. The third act where Uncle Josnua and Henry Hopkins pass by the big Grace church In New York City, and ear the voices of the choir within. Is especially Impressive, for It la here that he meets his wayward boy. Joseph Ward as "Happy Jack" Is also especially good. His lines all be ing presented to tne audience in a clear and effective way. Tne old-time songs sung ny member of "The Old Homestead" double uartett R. B. Cook, William C. Wood, scar Sidney. Fred S. Roberta. J. C. Brown, Nelson Riley, Joseph Ward and Robert Essworth In the opening act won prolonged applause. An unidentified magazine write; makes a good point which he mlglvf carry still further to advantage. He wanta America to get rid of the dan geroua and half-baked Idea that a dol lar I worth a half or a third of what It waa. ' His philosophy la to remember mac it la only the apant dollar that haa lost thla part of It Purchasing power and that the saved dollar Is' just aa valuable a ever It waa..' Nothing can De loat in assuming mat na is night in this, as long as tha assump tion continues that the time Is coming wnen tne price level will descend an approximately to normal. That It even will return to the plane of ten years ago la open to serious douut. But what Is certain and beyond all doubt Is that the saved dollar ha tha same debt-paying power as of old. It may not buy aa much in tha store. but when It come to paying a note or Jilting a mortgage it will go as far as in tne cheapest period In our history. - w - iCMTM or Gift
