Manchester Light and Power Company, obtained a charter and franchise from the City Coun cil, its "business being to supply ' gas to its. customers. This company has pros pered and is gradually becoming a favor ite institution in the city. The gas fur nished is excellent and gives a light, of brilliance and steadiness which attracts much attention and appreciative com ment. - This company is prepared to fur nish gas to all, "and what is most com mendable to furnish it at cheap rates, so that it is within the. reach of all who are willing to make aji effort to procure it. : CHURCHES HAVE ADVAXCE.D. The churches of the city have made de cided improvements during the past year. Manchester is notably blessed, considering its advantages, with excellent church edi fices. There are sixteen church buildings in the city— ten white and six colored. No more beautiful structures', than the new Central Methodist, the Presbyterian, and the Catholic church, which was recently erected, are found in any save the largest cities.. The 'other church buildings are creditable, and in most instances very, at tractive, and commodious. Meade-Memo rial—the church of the Episcopalians— has been attractively rearranged and adorned, and is beautiful in. its simplicity.' The congregation! .of the Bainbridge-Street .Baptist church, contemplate at an: early date, to rehabilitate their present large and commodious edifice, and make it a modern. building, of and comfort. The building at the corner of Eighteenth and Everett streets, called "Asbury chap- 1 el." where' a congregation of Methodists worship, is a beautiful and attractive one, arid an ornament to that part, of the city. The good "work :of;: of ; teaching- and preaching the word of God Js sedulously* carried on in all of these sanctuaries, and the religious .life of the city is now, as it has been iri'the'years past; 'active and influential in its blending- with the secular existence of this ancient':muni cipality. , .
