Rives stated to a.Dispatch reporter that the report that he had an nounced himself as a candidate for nomi nation for the position of Common wealth's Attorney was inaccurate and without foundation. Mr, Rives said that he did not know what he would do in the premises, but he certainly; would not an nounce himself at this "early date. Mr. James L. Pettit, who is at present Deputy Clerk of the Hustings Court, has been' mentioned for. the appointment as ■City Sergeant to succeed the late Ser- g eant H. C. Ferguson. Mr.; Pettit was for a number of years Deputy Sheriff '■ for Powhatan county,- and he" would" be . especially" fitted for the position.- M r. Pettit is not a.\ candidate for the office, but it; is believed that he would serve if he was appointed by .': Judge Ingrami. ■' Of course, ! there are no applications for the vacancy, and it will be filled; by : Judge Ingram, just as. the srces proper. -.lt : may be that 'no; one will; be designated, , but that Deputies Fisher", and/ Ferguson ■ will be permitted to fill out the term in I that capacity. Messrs. W. D. Ferguson j and G.;Ai Carr have been suggested for • the: appointment, and it; would not be. a j surprise, in event of an appointment, that it went to one .'or the other.- t The death of Sergeant Ferguson - will cause one of : the "biggest fights in the. coming spring election. It was thought that the principal, fight would L be for; the I lOfflce of Mayor, but now it seems proba-. ble that the fight will centre^ on the raco for Sergeant.'.. In addition\to the gentlemen already mentioned it is .whis pered that Mr.'- F. : ; W. Bass ; will : seek the nomination for the full term. With Messrs. Fisher- Ferguson, ; Pettit, Carr, Bass, and probably, several others, it would be hard to- pick the winner. . -Every elective office in Manchester,: ex-. ceT>t Clerk of." the Hustings Court, City Treasurer, .and; High Constable,; includ ing two members of the new Board -of Aldermen from each ward, will have to be elected at the election on the fourth Thursday in.
