(Special.)— The Constitutional Convention
has 'practically.;' checked"; litigation in L this
section of the } State. The Judge. of the
Circuit Court of this district and several
prominent lawyers are members of the
convention, and as, a consequence no con
tested ceses have been considered by the
court since the convention, convened. -In
one. case the delay is particularly unfor
tunate. About eighteen months ago a
young" man of- this town,; while attempt
ing -to get on. the caboose of; a freight
train, hroke the step, which .....was • [in an
unsafe condition, and. fell across the rail
way ' track, striking his back against •■ a
tie, and causing paralysis. At the time
the young man was engaged to be mar
ried to. o- young lady, and the happy;
union wa,s to have ; been solemnized on
tlie next day. Shortly afterwards he
brought; suit against the railroad for $50,
000. Before the suit 'matured the. conven
tion {convened, -and the case hasn't yet
come up for hearing. Since the accident
the condition- of the young man has con
tinually grown worse, and he is now in
a most critical state. If he were to: die
that would end the case, as his testimony,
is most material.
A few nights ago W. F. Deans, a color
ed baker, and Walter Butts (colored) had
a fight, in which Butts got the advantage.
-When separated Deans left for his home,
but soon returned with a pistol,' and,
finding Butts, opened fire on him. Seve
ral shots were fired, "but only one took
effect, which entered the right arm of his
victim. 1 Deans was immediately arrested
and sent on, for trial. -■■
