Senate Adjourned Early in Order
to Clear Up Muddle Over Judgcship
JElcctiyn.
Neither the Senate nor the House was
:i session an hour yesterday, and in
i<;ilher branch was there transacted busi
-itss of hardly passing importance. The
lumber of bills offered was not so great
is usual, and none of the measures pro
mised is scarcely worthy of special in en
lion.
There were twenty-one members of the
Jcrate present when the Ueutenanl-G-ov-
Tcor rapped that body at noon, and the
iiosr careful" counting did not nt any
iuie show more than a bare quorum.
Xcv, ilr. Beauchamp, of the Methodist
.-Lurch, made the opening prayer.
A number of bills were introduced, and
ti any were passed under the suspension
>i the rules. It is quite noticeable that
he members of the Senate are not nearly
;c. watchful of the passage of bills with
out their being referred to a committee
ir> they were whori the , body "was in
iission before the recess.
Mr. Bryant secured the':. passage; under
■i;s]>enslon of tlie rules, a bill to incor
mrate the Richmond Methodist Mission
vssodation.
L«eave of absence was sranted ZUr. Gar
ctt. the senator from Henry, vrho is de
emed at home by the critical illness ol
Us a(r«l mother. At the request of Mr.
>L Clair, leave of absence was also grant
•d Mr. Clayior. of Bedford.
Mr. Revercombe had passed, under sus
•<:nsiou of the rules, a. bill prescribing
he manner in which tho roads of Alle
lliahy should be .worked.
The Senate concurred in the House reso
ution fixing the hour of 12:30 for* the elee-
Jon of n Judge of the Scott County
;ourt and a Judge of the Corporation
2ourt of Roanokc. I-ater, Mr. Shackel
ford moved, to reconsider the action <j£
iho Senate, giving as reason therefor,
that the term of the Roanokc Corporation
Court Judge did not expire until the end
of the; present year, at which time the
terms of other judges also ended. He
thought there was no reason why one
judge should be elected and not another.
The Cair sustained Mr. Wickham's"
point of order that the resolution was
beyond the control of the S^nat^. and
that the only, way in which the muddle
;culd bfl cleared up was to break tha
lo'int order by adjournment.
Ro the Senate at 12:28. adjourned, on
notion of Mr. "Wickham, who accepted
m amendment by Mr. Ta'lo that tho mo-
Jon be "in honor of the day."
