November 21.— Fire broke out about 6:15 ■ o'clock -' this after noon in the. fan 'room of the immense ■Tunis Lumber Company's kiln system, on the southern branch of- the Elizabeth river, about three- miles from Norfolk, and before it could be gotten under con trol 1.000,000 feet >of lumber, the entire kiln system, and- much valuable machin ery had been destroyed by the flames. A telephone alarm was sent to the Fire Department of . Berkeley as soon as the Olaze was discovered, and an engine com pany responded. The Norfolk departmet was asked for aid, and sent over an engine and hose company, while several fire tugs assisted from the water front. For a time It; looked as- if the large Barnes & Greenleaf • Johnson : lumber mills and kilns would catch fire from the flying embers, for these two plants are only across a small creek from the Tunis plan t."' Over 1.600 tickets were sold at the gate yesterday, and over 1,200 to-day: The exhibits are very creditable, ■ consisting - of fancy work.
