How the Tin Woodman Escapea the Magie Flood
IT was now that th* tnie mettle of the adventurer* from th?
M_rvel?tie Lund of .Ob was clearly shovri.' Undaunted by the
irtrange'sights? of thje strange United States, they decided, to
explore the country thoroughly?In the same -way Columbus once
did.
Soon they came to a serles of small waterfalls tumbling down-,
, were In pretty cascades from a tail building on the brow of a hill.
Th ero was not much water in the channel Just then, but the marble
banks were broad and deep onongh to contain a river. ?
The Tin ?Woodman, seeing some pipes protrude from? the bed of.
the stream,' became curious to know what these queor-looklng
things were, used for, end brav.oly ventured forth to explore and
???amine them. After a brief inspection ho turned to his comrades
upon the bank and said;
"My dear friends, the pipe? were doubtless placed here to?--" '?
..? He got no further In his speech, for suddenly somo hidden newer
turned on a monstrous flow of water; the pipes, spouted a deluge
upon the poor Tin Woodman, who-ramldst file plaudits,of his
friends, who thought he had'himself caused this mighty flood?was.
swept off his feet, and borne swiftly down the stream.
In his terror the Tin Woodman clutched at Jack Pumpklnhead,
te save himself: hut alael.the.piinripkln cam? away in his grasp end,
.falling into the flood, floated.along ln.hls.ya.ke. Seelne; now\the't'
aoinethlng was seriously -wrong,. theUh?ugh'tful Scarecrow began
running along the bank, hoping to find a way to save his friend.

the Tin Woodman, with great presence of mind, caught at Jack's
pumpkin head, which floated near,* and Used It as a life-preserver

llnslly the wise Woggle-Bug, being a swifter runner than the
others mann Red to seise the Tin Woodman with two of his hands,
while with tho other two he cleverly rescued Jaok's pumpkin head;
bringing both the unfortunates to dry land. Then, while the Tin
Woodman sank down exhaused, hut saved, at the feet of his
faithful friends, the Scarecrow affectionately supported him and
supplied him with quantities of oil to prevent his joints from becom?
ing rusted and to eoothe and restore him to his usual vigor.- '?..?.
Jack's head.being replaced, that personage also found himself to
be In perfect condition, so throughout the little party of ad venturers
the moments of intense excitement gave way to joy and thanksgiv?
ing?
"Where am 17" ?uddeniy asked the Tin Woodman, raising hie
head. But ? one was able to reply until the discerning Woogle-Bug,
whose bright eyes-nothing seemed to escape,? made answerf "I'll
tell you in a minute."
And then, while'all the party grouped around him and listened
Intently; the Wogelo-Bug told exactly where they were.
