trade as reflected in the large increase
In the number of idle freight cars
These Influences to a large extent were
aii offset to Saturday's excellent bank I
statement and the tone was heavy j
throughout. After a moderate selling
movement early in the day bad run its i
course the market grew dull and spirit - !
less with no pronounced tendency In j
cither direction. Quotations ut the end j
of the day were fractionally under (
Saturday's close. The coalers wore the j

?us Southern lines, especially Norfolk
und Western and Louisville und Nash- j

a prospective dividend increase being
connected with the advance of the lor- ?
ini r. There was steady buying of the
Kbck Island Issues, which were strong :
and active, and attention was directed j
to the restriction of operating expenses I
of the system. The Hill issues were I
quietly strong, but the llarrlmans were :
Inclined to heaviness and New York j
Central was again under pressure. ;
Complete returns from the railroads of;
the country for November show only a I
minor decrease in gross earnings, but !
a falling off of 11.51 per cent, in net, |
the laruest of the year.
The government's report of record- |
breaking exports of steel and iron in J
1910 was of little advantage to steel.,
?which offered freely at slight auvaiice?, .
Money continues to accumulate here,
and lower rates for all accommodations
are looked for. The banks made a fur- i
ther gain of $1,990,000 to-day of the
subtreasury. Commercial paper was in
bitter demand. The brightest feature
of the bond market is found in re?
newed assurances from foreign sources !
of large participation In the forthcom?
ing Issue of Now York City bonds. i
Bonds were Irregular; total sales,

government bonds were unchanged on
