Some of the figures given yesterd' by ??. prOtnlheut real estate operator are remarkable, and there seems to he a corresponding activity in the market. .v marked feature of this increase in real estate values in the Southshle. is that it is not confined to any particu? lar portion of the ward, but is seen in all sections. ?me instance quoted of a lot hought few years ago for 5180 and sold re? cently for $1,100? is hardly a fair illus? tration, but glv*s some idea of the immense jump laken by land -? thisi side. Another lot on upper Hull Street, recently purchased for $2,S00 brought, a. bid of $6,000 a few weeks ago. Other instances could be cited, but all not so remarkable as these two! The Councilmon from Washington Ward are. the recipients of many com? plaints from their constituents in re? gard to the ine-tflcient lighting on the Free Bridge. The Southjude. people and the Conn- 1 ell representatives are clamoring for electric lights on this thoroughfare, ! since it has been said that nothing can keep the gas lights on the bridgs? In working order. Some move will short? ly be made to bring the matter up in the Council, in order that better pro- ' tection will be furnished to the pedes? trians who are forced to use this , means of passage nightly. A Councilman recently pointed out; that the need for better lighting would ! be increased when Mayo's Bridge Is i closed and the -tire traffic to and fro: thrown on this bridge. Some protection from possible foot? pads ?dtould be fiivrlehecl. it la ar vtted, by the city to the working who live on tho suiui, . . of the river and are forced to walk over this struc? ture In almost total darkness.
