York arket New York. February 27.?Little pro jress was made to-day toward recov? ery from the sharp setback which the ?lock market received last Friday fol-? lowing announcement of the freight , rates decision. Tbc undertone wat good throughout most of the session and prices worked up gradually, aftei 1 n heavy opening showing general losses from Saturday's closo, running to a point in Reading, Northern Pacific and Erie. Lato In the day. however, tho j market cased off and most of the gains | Were lost. Declines at tho opening presumably i v.cro the result of efforts to dispose of stocks acquired at Friday's low; Ik Lcs. Owing to tho possibility that! decisions in the antitrust cases might j ". e announced by tbb Supreme Court, traders wore reluctant to buy. and "f- . fori tigs wore accepted only at sub? stantial concessions. When B became evident that there was little oppor lunlty for liquidation, the pressure to j s<ll was relieved and t he improvement j set in. Word came from Washington . shortly after midday that no decisions' in the antitrust cases were looked for j hc-re. and bull traders bid up stocks tor a time. United States Steel was forced up to a point nopve tho open? ing, and tlie general list was lifted to a level which showed light net gains, but pressure to sell in t!ie final dealings left the market with few i gains at the close. The day witnessed an accession to the ranks of the bears but that faction displayed more than usual caution, the course of tho mar? ket having seemingly demonstrated that stocks are in the hands of those >vell competent to hold tu^ua. Developments of the stay gave furth? er encouragement to the belief that the railroads are experiencing im? provement of conditions. The readi? ness with which London's allotment ol St. Paul and Kansas City bonds was absorbed strengthened the opinion thai American securities have lost none of theii; value in the eyes of European investors. . Announcement was made of the sale of the Erie road's $2.500.000 issue of, gold notes. The Chicago, Mil? waukee and Puget Sound Railway, it was learned, Is to expend several mil? lion dollars for Improvements, and the Pennsylvania made known its inten? tion of proceeding with work on now equipment, decided upon before the rates decision ?\as announced. Still further Indications of the improvement ?wore contained In January railway re? ports, which recorded increases in net earnings for the Rock Island. Buffalo, Rochester and Plttsburg and Cincin? nati, Hamilton and Dayton. Time money rate.s were slightly firmer, although call money was offered nt l per cent, late in the day. Directors ,pf MR Soars-Roebuck Com- j pany declared a stock dividend of ' 83 1-3 per cent., following atlthorlza-:j lion of an increase in the capital from j $.10.000,000 to $40.000,000.
