Jordan, of Staunton, as to Iiis assertion before the Anti-Saloon League of New? port News to the effect that Governor Swanson . had restored the citizenship of a negro convicted of voting illegally, lie secured his Information from the negro himself. In a letter. Professor Jordan gives no other evidence to support his assertion, which he made with dramatic effect from the ??oi;A' at Newport News. As shown in The Times-Dispatch n fey/ days ago from the records in the office of the Secretary of the Common? wealth, Governor Swanson issued a conditional pardon to this negro, at the request of many leading citizens oi Staunton. This, of course, did not re storo any rights of citizenship, for sep? arate action on tho part of a Gover? nor Is necessary to permit a person convicted of felony to vote again. Professor Jordan's letter is as fol? lows: "Staunton, Va.. March 23, 1311. "Editor Times-Dispatch: "This morning's Staunton paper pub? lishes an extract from your paper. In which 1 am charged with making reckless statements, and in which you proceed to point out some mistakes that you allege I have made, and you cite certain records to sustain your allegation. "The records of the court here show that at the September term. 1903, Rich? ard Ilohgood. colored. ?;.H indicted for Illegal voting at the laet local option election, and that the same grand jury returned another indictment at the same term of the court against the same party for perjury. Ho was trie*) before a jury upon the indictment for Illegal voting, found guilty, and sen? tenced to serve one minute. In Jail and to pay a fine of $10. He was tried before the police Justice upon the in? dictment for perjury, found guilty, and sentenced to serve fifteen days In j?i <nid to pay k fine of $15. A few days after this I saw in the papers that Richard Hobgood had been pardoned by Governor Swanson, and a little later I saw Hobgood In a store here and he told me that he had received his par? don: that his lawyer had told him that all that he had to do now was to pay his taxes and he could vote, and that ho intended to do so and vote as he pleased. Your article says this pardon was a conditional one, and thai It does not. restore to him the right to votp. The pardon does not say any? thing abut tl>e right, to vote, and the best lawyers whom T have consulted here are not sure on this point. "His past record shows that be made a fearful assault upon a policeman here pome years ago. He was indict? ed upon the two charges hereinbefore set forth and found guilty. These wc.ro very serious offenses, the punishment wholly Inadequate, and he was. In the ease of perjury, pardoned by the Gov? ernor. The same grand tury that In? dicted Hohgood for perjury indicted three white men for perjury (not com? mitted in a local option election), and each one was sentenced to two years In the penitentiary by a jury. "The same week that Hobgood re? ceived this sentence of one minute in jail for Illegal voting a man in New York, tried for tho same sort of of? fense, was given three years in the penitentiary, and a few days before 1 spoke at Newport News Judge Garri? son, of Gamden, N. J., called the at? tention of the grand Jury to the SECOND FLO?R?THREE~*NICK, "UNr furnished rooms; private hath and back porch; all connecting. 520 N. IC C OF CATARRH Catarrh usually begins with irritated, inflamed membranes of the head, t nose and throat, from which there is a constant and copious discharge oi ; watery matter. Nature intends that these membranes shall be nourished bj | the blood, but waste matters and impurities deposited into these delicat? parts, sets up inflammation and the discharge is a natural result. There U \ only one way to cure Catarrh, and that is to remove the cause by purifying the blood. Washes, sprays, inhalations, etc., do not reach the circulation, and therefore can only afford temporary relief. S. S. S. cures Catarrh trj ? cleansing the blood of all impure catarrhal matter, and at the same tim< building up the system by its unequalled tonic effects. In other word! S. S.S. cures Catarrh by purifying the blood so that the mucous surface^, and linings of the body arc supplied with healthy nourishment instead o! being continually irritated from the catarrhal impurities. Then the inflamec membranes heal, the discharge is checked, head noises cease, the stomach is toned up, and the throat is no longer clogged with mucus. Rook on Catarrl I and any medical advice desired, free. S. S. S. is for sale at drug stores.
