New York Stock Market New York. September 29.?V\ all Street, showed Increasing nervousness to-day j as to the intentions of the government In regard to the enfori eratnt of the anti-trust law. Selling f stocks was conducted on a scale which se*vincd to. indicate thut some Investors were in! fear of further dissolution proccedlnKS , sgainst large corporations. This wait notably true of United states Steel, which once more was called upon t"i shoulder the heaviest burden The Ions I mid severe atta-k Upon this Issue had telling effect to-day. . The preferred stock and bonds gave way, the former j selling at 1 10 V*. tho lowest price since i 1909. and the latter at 100, the lowest i since 19l>S. The common also reached 1 a new low point on the'year, t"-- T?. the( losses In each case- exceeding three points. Elsewhere in the market de- i clings were gem rat The chief losses' were among the. Industrials, running as high as live potnts. Railroad stocks] in most oases declined Utile more than i a point. On a late rally the railroad .-hares recovered their losses, and a1 partial recovery was effected among the industrials. Wall Street for several days has been i listening to reports that one by ono | tho creat corporation are to be dis? solved, provided the Federal govern? ment can bring it about. Despite the] lack of foundation for these reports, ?ney were effectual In unsettling sentl mcn'. Happenings bearing upon trade, railroad ?.raffle, agricultural prospects and the money markets have been subordinated to politics us Influences affecting the movement of securities. Announcement to-duy that the gov? ernment would permit the International I Harvester Company, without a disjoin-] tlon suit, to adapt Itself to the Sher? man law. while affecting that stock favorably at the time, did not serve to bring about a better feeling, but, on the contrary, was followed by the heaviest selling of the day. The attack on United States Steel was assisted by reports of impending reductions In wages at steel mills. Steel men were said to have abandoned hope of a, stiff? ening of prices this fall and to have, decided that a substantial lowering In wages was inevitable. Steel prices now average about $7 a ton below the rates prevailing In 1907, and the reduction has been made with no corresponding change In the scale of wages. The, weekly trade reviews reported a fur? ther falling off in business, together! with some new price concessions. The copper shares showed marked Weakness to-.lay on statements in re? gard to abandonment of efforts to re? strict production. The weakness of thes- shares also reflects the heilet that the large buying of Europe, ospc-1 dally (Jermany, will be at least tem? porarily curtailed by the business re-: uctlon abroad. Houses with London connections were heavy buyers of stocks. Foreign pur , chases Ol Union Pacific alone were estimated at more than 10.0(10 shares, and the total amount taken probably exceeded to.oiui shares. The belief that the Moroccan question is on the verge of peaceful settlement undoubtedly is largely responsible for this chungo or attitude on the part of Europe. Inter? national bankers said to-day that they regarded an advance to-morrow In the' Bank of England's rate to '4 per cent.; as highly probable. The fact that the! bank declined to discount under the .rat? to-day pointed to such action. The bond market wus weuk. Total sales, par value, $2.190,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call.
