Stock Market New York. N. Y., September 25.?TU? Juost extensive decline In stock? ?'bleu Wall Street has known since the long aiowuward movement began early last month occurred to-day. The selling wie n,ot concentrated so largely on United S'tales Steel as during last week's upheaval) but extended through the entire active list. Prices gave way on every quarter, and the losses of many of the leading issues tanged /rom four to six points In the late trading the market developed pro? nounced strength, and stocks rose al luoht as abruptly as they had do cliatd. Tlu- ? Ld of tne session found losses gre-aily reduced. The day began In comparative quiet, and although the market Still showed sigiib oi nervousness, the Urst hour witnessed uo unusuaj fluctuations. Ut lore uoon. however, the seUing in m i.a.-tMi to enormous proportions. Or den to .? flooded the market, which broke proclpliately. Almost .all the leading issues fell to new low points1 of the year. L'nion Pacific, which was the object <??' particularly heavy pres? sure, broke ti 1-S to 153 1-2. Reading; lost 4, St. Paul. 4, Northern Pacific. Kuuthern Pacific, Canadian Pacilic, Great Northern preferred, und bt-ingn Valley t or more. Among ihe indus- i trials, the metal shares were especially i weak. Selling of United States Slee) Mas extremely large, although Read ing and Union Pacific were thrown in j market In almost as heavy amounts. United Slates Steel's low point was (>1 1-S, a decline of 4 5->. Amalgamated Copper lost 4 1-S, American Smelting. I :i 1-4, and Anaconda, S. American' Beet Sugar, American Cotton Oil, Vir? ginia-Carolina Chemical, Nutional Bis- ] cuit and United Stales Express broke, 4 points or more. Attorney-General Wlckersham's intl-! (nation that a tentative plan for the1 dissolution and readjustment of the! .American Tobacco Company has been agreed upon wus the signal lor the: recovery; The upward movement be- ] ;ii In the American Tobacco seeurl-] ties. On the --curb" the common fha res rallies is points The preferred rose from 91 to 93 1-2 on the Stock Ex? change, and both the 4 por cent, and t> per cent, bonds scored good advances. The movement extended to the re? mainder Of the market, and before the close the bidding became spiritd. Re? coveries ranged from 2 to 4 points. United States Steel and some other inactive stocks closed with only frac? tional losses. With the exception of the word re? ceived from the Attorney-General, there were no developments to throw light upon the clouded situation, which has unsettled Wall Street so completely. While to-day's break was attributed in part to powerful specu? lative interests committed to the bear tide ot the market. It was evldcn that liquidation on a large, scale was still in procress. As the decline proceeded liquidation in speculative holdings was forced, and for a time the market was threatened with utter demoralization. Bear reports, with no apparent foun? dation, were circulated with effect. It was hinted that the government was about to bring proceedings against other large corporations. The uncer? tainty which prevailed everywhere was perhaps the most battling and disturb? ing featui*, and there appeared to be little hope of settled conditions until some definite indication was obtained as to tne position of the United States Steel Corporation and oilier large con? cerns under the Sherman law as now ? oQstrued. Reports of the progress of trade In? dicated little change, except an im? provement of traffic on some of the Western roads. A loss In gold hold? ings of more than Tl.000,000 was re? ported by the Bank of Germany In Its weekly statement. The amount of French capital withdrawn from Ger? many In the last two weeks was esti? mated at tltiO.OijO.OOP. Transactions in Etocks amount to 1.449.SOO shares, the largest total since June 30. 1910. Bonds also were very active. Prices were depressed sharply, but there was a recovery when stocks rallied. Total sales of bonds, pai value, $4.205.000. United r-tates government bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales- foi'*' the day, 1.449.S00 r-ha res. New York. For example, we spent $750.00 on one of them in fourteen different papers, and the benefits received justified the ex? penditure. To a number of others we can directly trace valuable trust business, such as the writing of wills or the changing of wills already written, naming this company Executor and Trustee. Then we have one which brought over $30,000 in deposits. Confidentially, we like to read that one over and over again. These comments are made for two reasons: 1st. We are often asked if advertising pays, to which we answer YES, it pays us. 2d. We want it generally known that while the great end of our business is in the Trust Department, we also do a banking business. Not commercial bank? ing, but we pay 3 per cent, on personal and inactive accounts, subject to check, the interest being calcu? lated on daily balances maintained. We specially invite the reader to open an account with us. Out-of-town" accounts receive careful attention. Virginia Trust Co., RICHMOND, VA.
