BUSINESS INVADES RESIDENCE STREET Six Floors Packed With Furniture?Hundred and Fourteen Thousand Square Feet of Room. The formal opening yesterday of the new and magnificent furniture store of Sydnor & Hundley, Incor? porated, at Seventh and Grace Streets, In perhaps the beginning of a new era In at lfast a part of the larger retail business of Richmond. It marks the start of business to Grace Street, which ever since Richmond has been a town has been strictly a residential thoroughfare. It Is known tliat other large Rroad Street stores urn arrang? ing for a Grace Street entrance, and some are expected to move bodily to Grace as soon as handsome residences can be removed and othor houses erected for commercial purposes. It hps also been whispered that some Main Street merchants have their eyes on Grace. The new building Into which the big furniture firm have moved their enormous stock 'Is an ornament to business Richmond, and Is a structure that larger cities might well be proud of. It was planned especially for tho retail furniture business. Including the basement, there nre six floors, each having 19.000 square feet of space, making in all 114.000 square feel. There are freight an<j passenger ele? vators connecting all of the floors, which are run by electricity. The en? tire building Is electrically lighted and steam heated, and each floor Is equipped with waiting rooms, wash rooms, etc. The basement Is arranged for all manner of summer goods and for all classes of kitchen furniture, refrig? erators, stoves, heaters, etc., each in separate department spaces. Five linn, i?, mi,- Floors. The first, or street floor, is given over to an assortment of general stock, being largely cut off with screens Into room and office' effects. The eastern end of this floor from the Grace Street centre door to the wall Is given over to office furniture, and here is displayed desks, tables office chairs, riling cabinets, both in wood md metal, and. in fact, every con? ceivable thing required to fit up nn office with an eye to convenience busi? ness, comfort and style. Just to the north of this Is the shipping room, a large and light apartment, equipped with every facility for handling goods, and Just to the north of it is the load? ing court. In which the wagons and automobile trucks come under cover and can be loaded and unloaded In all kinds of weather. Along the Seventh Street side of this floor, and extending around on the Grace Street side to the centre door are the beautiful room effects, in which are displayed com? pleted parlors, sitting rooms, hall rooms, bedrooms, etc. The northwest corner Is reserved for the display of Ruck's ranees.
