On Sunday even- 1 ing a negro, Elijah Christian, shut a white man named Will Mays as the result of a quarrel. Mays was shot in the abdomen and was carried to a! friend's house nearby. Doctors were summoned from here and from that neighborhood, but j tney were not able to attend to hl in. i Mays was a very pour man, but friends guaranteed to pay for any services rendered and also for his hospital 1 charges if brought to this city. Rose Well Page, former member of the House of Delegaten from Hanover county, and former chairman of the House Committee for Courts of Jus? tice, has withdrawn from the contest for the ofllce of Auditor of Public Ac? counts, and seeks the position of, sec? ond Auditor of Virginia. The latter position Is held by Judge John (1. Dew, of King and Queen county, who has served two terms, and who up to this announcement has had no opposition for re-election. Sir. Pago had been regarded as a possibility in the Auditor's race in the event of a deadlock, but In view* of hist late entrance into the Held, it is probable that hut few votes were pledged lo him.
