New York Stock Market New York, January 15.?Thcro is little to distinguish the record of to day'o truding in slocks from thul of last week, with Us uncortuln move? ments and undercurrent of heaviness. No new influences of importance were brought to bear upon the securities market, and traders showers showed un Increasing predisposition toward tbc bear side. Prices were depressed in the early part of the day, but later tho market advanced In a hesitating way. Toward the close a br.sk buy? ing movemer.t largely erased the losses and the end of the day found price changes in most cases Insigni? ficant. Ab prices moved downward opera? tions for the short account were en? couraged by reports of sell! k by Im? portant financial Interests. The move? ment seemed to derive Its chief Im? petus, however, from short selling by the professional elements. It was di? rected against the stocks which were conspicuously heavy last week, par? ticularly lint coppers, llarrlman Isaacs and St. Paul. These Issues and a few of the less active stocks were de? pressed a point or so. but the bears were unable to dislodge long stock and losses in most cases were small. The coal stocks moved In eccentric fashion. After decllnli.g moderately they became strong, und both Read? ing and Lehlgh Valley at o::e t'.mo stood nearly C points above tho pre? vious close. St. Paul was the conspi? cuous feature of the late trading. It became strong and active late in the day, and closed with a small gain. An Influence which helped to hrlng about the Improvement In tonq was the evidence, as the day progressed, of a broader inquiry for Investment se? curities. The great gains In cash reported in Saturday's bank statement exerted a hontlmental Influence upon the money market, although there was scarcely any borrowing of time funds, and the inquiry for call money fell fur short of the available supply. The bond market '"'as irregular. Total sales, por value. JS,004,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales for the day. 417,100 shares.
