'lhe Finance Committee has decided
to recommend to the Council an appro?
priation of $?.950 for enlarging the
rorce and improving the equipment of
the fire department. This will include
the purchase of a fuel wagon and man
to drive it; the -putting In commission
of a third engine, with engineer and
driver, and the addition to the fight?
ing force of the department of eleven
new men, making fourteen In all. The
appropriation covers -salaries, the pur?
chase of additional horses and harness,
repalra, fuel, etc., to the close of the
present fiscal year?June 30 next. Trie
annual added expenses thereafter will
be a little rise of $10,000.
The Finance Committee also recom?
mends an appropriation of $2,500 for
the purchase of an auto*-patrol wagon
for the use of the police department,
an equipment thta has long been need?
ed.
The Joint Commute on Finance, Pub?
lic Improvement and Water and
Sewers, in session together have agreed
to recommend the construction of
sewer between the city and the prop?
erty of the Walnut Hill Corporation,
just south of the city, at an estimated
coat of $8,809. the city to bear one
half of the expense, and the corpora?
tion one-half. These recommendations |
will be approved by the Council.
Slander Sadie.
The October term of the Circuit I
Court of Grecnesville County was i
opened to-day with Judge West pre- \
siding. Among the civil actions on
the docket are two suits for |
slander and on the Commonwealth":
docket are several felony oases. The I
court will probably be in session the |
greater part of the week.
Far Stealing; Papers.
Six little colored boys, all under I
twelve years of age, were prlsonera I
in the Police Court this morning on
tha charge of stealing Sunday's Times- j
Dispatch from the doors of subscribers,
complaints of which had been lodged I
with the police. The proof was clear,
but on account of the youth of the I
prisoners a whipping instead of a
prison sentence was ordered for them.
The whipping was promptly admlnia- j
tered by the parents of the boys in ]
the rear room of the station-house

against J. H. Goss, a white citizen,
charged with forgery, is set for trial
in the Hustings Court to-morrow.

On Thursday. Napoleon Washington,
colored, charged with the murder of
Albert West, colored, which occurred
at midnight In August lsat on Po
cahontas bridge, will he pnt on trial.
Weat was stabbed to death and the
accused claims self-defense.

The collections of fines in the Police
Court In September for violations of
city ordinances amounts to $352.60, an
unusually large sum.
