idea of seeing how a thermometer
would behave oft a cold day on a trip
up the steep sides of the Peaks of
Otter, A. O Brown. W. K. Laughon.

mounted the heights of that mountain
knob.
In the dim twilight of the early
morn, they boarded the 6:40 train and
went to Thaxton. arriving at 7:30. At
Thaxton the niercury stood at 19 de?
crees above the sero mark. On foot
the party traversed the winding roads,
reaching the foot of the peaks at I)
o'clock The thermometer recorded at
this place a temperature of 3t degree^.
By 10:30 the climbers were on the
top of the peaks, where all was bare
and desolate. In the ravines, where
the sun seldom <asts its rays, snow
added to the bleak, wintry scene. On
the top of the peaks, the thermometer
dropped to Is degieea, and rose one
point by 12:30 o'clock, when the pe?
destrians departed for Thaxton on the
return trip. TejnperatatTC in the val?
ley at 2:30 was found to be 4i. The
party arrived at Thaxton at 3 o'clock
In time for the train which arrives in
Koanoke at 4:35. The total distance
of twenty-four miles was covered in
rive and a half hours.
