While the Ions expected fall of Santiago did not take place today, it is evident that the crisis has been reached. Within the next twenty-four hours it will either surrender or receive such a baptism of fire as seldcm falls to the lot of a besieged town. Gen. Shafter is quoted as saying, "If he refuses I will open on him at 12 noon tomorrow (Thursday) with every gun I have, and havo the assistance of the navy, who are ready to bombard the city with 13-inch shells." Washington, July 13. The press reports of the burning of Siboney by tho medical officers of the United States army had a depressing effect hero upon the friends of the soldiers at tho front in Cuba. It has been for a long time impossi ble to learn anything from any official source as to the exact state of affairs at the headquarters of the Army Corps. Finally tho fact was reluctantly admitted that Yellow Jack existed at Siboney, but the reports received over night from the med ical officers did state there were fourteen cases of fever that were suspicious. VERMEULEftl'S. Grocery Dept. The insurgents on July Gth reported to Admiral Dewey that the German p.niiVnut Trenr in Snbii? bav refused to oermit them to attack tho Spaniards on Grande Island Hear Admiral Dewey promptly dispatched the United States cruisers Ilaliegh and Concord to investigate tho matter. On entering Subig bay, the Haliegh opened fire on the forts, whereupon the Irene slipped her cable and steamed out by another channel. The result of the tiro of the American warship was that the Spaniards, numbering over 500 men, surrendered everything. This week we ofFer Mason Jcire at low prices. The Proposition to Vote on the Adoption of the Free Text-Book System Drew Forth a Large Crowd. A large and representative crowd or citizens assembled Monday evening in the high school room to show their in terest in the affairs of our schools. The meeting was called to order by J. F. Schwartz, president of the board, and the minutes of the last annual meeting were read and opproved. The director's report was made by W. (J. Clark which was as follows : RECUPT8. (i.-ix ral and Mill Tax Hack Ta "rimary Momy Unrary had been read and discussed the question was put to a voto with the result that the district decided to adopt tho free text book system. The vote stood 30 to 10 in favor of the system on the first ballot As there was no further business to come before tho meeting it was moved supported and carried that the meeting adjourn. Free Street Fair. Free street fairs are rapidly taking the place of county fairs in this and many other states and their popularity is ac knowledcred by all who have had tho irood fortune to attend one of them Tho matter has been brought to the at tention of our merchants with the re sult of considerable interest being mani fested in tho project. The editor of this paper was in Cadillac last Saturday and while there secured much valuable in formation as to the manner of conduct ing these fairs, a very successful one being held in that place last fall. The most feasible plan it seems would be to call a meeting of the citizens, appoint the several committees, settle upon some late in the fall, and then proceed to work. The first week in October would be the best time for holding the fair un doubtedly as it wouid not conflict with the lair at Ithaca. of all odds and ends. Some fine Shoes at less than PRICE. Y. Schwarta was elected to succeed himself for three years. A vote was next taken to choose trnar.pn for throe voars to succeed G. S. Ward. J. M. Montigel received a ma jority of the votes cast on the first bal lot and upon motion was doclared eloc ted. The principal issue of tho evening was brought up by the announcement ot the question of whether the district should adopt the freo text-book law of 1SS9 or in default of this action would come under the law of 1S97 on the first of January, 1899 and be under the control of the state board of commissioners which are to bo selected for that purpose. Very few had looked up the two lawa and knew scarcely anything in regard to the matter, while some interpreted tho to mean ono thing whilo others took en tirely an opposite view.
