CHICAGO CORRESPONDENCE. Mild Weather—The Election—The Wheat Market Butli e>-The Ke llgous Pres.—The Interior—The Standard —The Agricultural Pres. - What They Do— Wc tern Journal, for We.tern Men—The Prairie Far iner-Th* Lenal News —Amuse ment*. Chicago, Not. loth, 1870.—Mild weather cmtinues. This morning a few fl-.kts of snow fell, but it soon cleared i ff bright and wirm. and it teems more like September thin November. THE ELECTION. Since my las* letter we Lave bad an excited election, with bitter and disgraceful person alities on the Congressional i-f-ue as the mam staples in the canvas*. The Tribune bolted ttie Republican caudul.ito for Con gress, Chas. B. Farwell, of the. wholesale dry goods house of John V. Farwell A Go., su'd united with the Times a:.d the Democ racy on John Wentworth as a reform candi date, and was beaten by over i: 000 majority. The Times repudiated Wentworth after the election, declaring that his course ha I been such through the canvass that i: did not re gret his defeat. There is a v ry strong feel ing among Republican business men against the Tribune, fi r its cr urso during the can vass, and it has evidently lost ca-t among strict party men. But as it took this contse of deliberate choice, it doubtless anticipated the consequences of such a step at the out set. The Rt publicans made a pretty clean sweep in both city and couuty, but have fallen off largely in the state. THE WHEAT MARKET is not very animated, No. 2 selling at SUM'S 1 00. Receipts the past week were 364 840 bushels, and shipm nts 511,28 b bushels. TANARUS; e European news rendering a general war probable encourages holders to hope for a rise, but all such exp; ctations are uncertain. BUSINESS is fair, bat not unusually active. The course of trade is healthy—not speculative. THE RELIGIOUS PBE S. Chicago has become the radiating point for religious, as well as secular, infill* nces for the great Northwest, and for abioty, enter prise, scholarship, breadth ol vi \vs and a vigorou * piety, its religious press tv li bear favorable conn arisen w th that of Boston or New iork. The centre ot popu'ation and empire has na-sed from the s aboard to the Mississippi Valley, ;ini the people living in the Mississippi basin ar henceturth to give law to this continent Wc m-ed a distinct ive li*eratur<, religious a-< well as secu.ar, adapteu to the genius and wants < f the We. t and the leadii g minds t f this cr-utial r* gioii perceive this tact and accept the rcuponsi oilty which it imposts. It is not disre.pcct ful to our E stern bn tfcn n, or assuming to be wis- r or better than they, to say that the men who live in th. Great West and are a part of it can better comprehend its necessi ties ind provi ie forth m. Politic ai I e poiit cal press here long ago attain'd their majority here, and it is time tbit religions people at the west ceasi and to look to the esat for their supply of religion-, newspapers— especially t-icce they can ..ov be supplied an well, if not better, at home. And nis a duty they owe to themselves to m.-taiu their heme press. In the front rank of religions^,ipera in this city is THE INTERIOR, an ably edited and beautifully printed seven co’umu quarto weekly, :ho organ of the re united Prcsbyteriin Church, numbering among its contributors some of the ablest minds ot the country, and having well-in formed and sagacious correspondents at tlie chiet commercial, political and religious cen tres of Europe am. America. It has receiv ed the warmest commendations of the press in all quarters, religious and secular, and meets admirably a want lot g M, by the Presbyterians ot the west. It gives, in ad dition to religious intelligence, the market reports, a full r-ynopsts of home and foreign news, fresh and interesting reading matter for all classes and is a living exponent of so cial, civil and moral progress,an lot the best hopes and aspirations ot the tun sin which welive. lu eight mouths it his reached a circulation of 12, OOU—a striking proof ot its excellence and popularity. 1c is publi lied by the Western Publishing Company for $2 50 a 3 ear, and should have a pla ,- e in every Presbyt o ian t unity ia the northwest. Too tu subscrib ns now for the next year whi get the paper free till Jan. 1, 1871. The organ of the Baptist denomination in tho west is. THE STANDARD. A religions family paper, in its eighteenth year, with a circu alien of 18 750, published m Chicago by Church A Goodman at $3 a year. It is conducted w.iu marked ability, and is creditable to the lirge religions body it so efficiently n presents. No Biptlat lani uy should ba wilL. at it. THE AGBICULTUKAL PRESS. Agricultural j mrnalisin, in this country, is of but comps: atively rece t growth. Within tho hut twenty years their number hi3 men largely increased, and the leading outs have bet a greatly improved. A few, located at central points, by the enterprise and fore sight of their publishers, have attained a large circu ati. n and become almost indis pensable to tho intelligent and thrifty fa; men WHAT THE* Du. They employ able writers and corrcspond- C'L.s. and gather and embody the results of j the b st experiments in tarming, gardening and stock-raising, over a wide extent of conn- j try, and, for a mere pittance, transmit to I each household the practical kno dodge an i i ripe * xnerience of the most skilled, scientific and successful cultivators of the son. WESTERN JOURNALS FOB WESTERN MEN. And as the soil and climate of the west dif fer materially from th* se of the east, and farming here re quirts peculiar meth ods, there are tar sir >nger reasons way farmers should prefer western to eastcru agricultural journal-, than why tin v should pi.Ter western to > as'ern politi cal and ulndous j uniats. It is piadical knowledge ot western farming that the west ern tai mer needs, ami no farmer’s journal can aid him so much, other things being equal, as one grown out of western experi ence on western soil. Ami as there i- no point so favorable for th- production of just such a pap. r as the great agricultural p r non of tii e mutry needs, as Chicago, is but the nalinal law : 1 development that her* sh u and be located tho first, oldest, ablest and m >st widely circulated western journal of this class, THE PRAIRIE FARMER. Establuhed in ISII, it lias not only kept p .on with agricultural iuipioveuwiits, but i with the a arveb ae growth of the N rthwebt. j 1 1 is a large quarto weekly, well printed ini clear while paper and illustrated with fine engraving*, ami pub.isheil by the I’raiiie j Farmer Company—m anew build.ng, con-i strutted especia ly fur tis purpose—at 112 Bt., altl ft .r. It gives the earliest and fullest practical infor mation on ah that pertains to the Farm, the Garden and the Houst hold, wide-awake edi torials, and a great variety of well prepared lea sing matter for the family circle. No farmer can read it for a year, without being many times its pi ice the richer. JSn'oscribt rs for 1*571 git it free to the fii-t of January. First tho pastor, h. ving left some thing in his study, gave out a hymn which be thought long enough, and went after it. But the hymn was not long enough, and the congregation waited and the organ tooled some little time. The sermon, pro ceeded some ten minutes, when, next, a lady in the front seats fell screaming in a ht of epilepsy, and stopped everything. Quiet being restored, the sermon went on, disturbed at intervals by the movement of one or two who were in attendance upon the suSorer, when suddenly there was a stir arid a shuffling noise from the rear and a lady who had fainted was borne hastily out into the porch. Again the preacher proceeded, and in a few min utes another rustle was caused by the sud den faintness of a third, who did not quite swoon away, and was led gently down in a back pew. No competition, libera] i To Physicians New Yoke, August loth, 18C8. Allow me to call your attention to my PREPARATION OF COMPOUND EX TRACT BUCUU. Tie component parts are, BUCHU Long Leaf, CUBEBS JUNI PER BERRIES. Mode of Preparation. Buchu, in vacuo. Juniper berries, by distillation, to form a tine gin. Cubebs extracted by dis placement with spirits obtained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use. Buchu as prepared by Druggists, is ot a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a flame destroys this (its active principle,) leaving ad irk and glutinous decoction. Mine is the color of ingredients. The Buchu in my preparation predominates. The smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, as made in Pharmacopoea, nor is it a Syrup— and therefore can be used in cases where fever and inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial and that upon inspection it will meet with your approbation, With a feeling of profound confidence, I am very respectfully, H. T. HELMBOLD, Chemist and Drugg st of 19 Year’s Ex perience. (From the largest Manufacturing Chemists in the World.) November, 4, 1854. “I am acquainted with Mr. H. T.
