THE SUPERIOR TIMES. SATURDAY, JANUARY 28TH, 187 J. No lato nows in rogard to the St. Crpix Land Grant. Oi'R oki citizen, CoL N. G. Wilcox, arrived to-day from Illinois. A man named James Campbell was shot in an alter nation at the N. P. Junction en Sunday last. The Doctors report Campbell as otit of danger. The members of the “Minnesota Legislature made an i excursion to Dnlwlh on Thursday. They had a high old time, and left for i>t Paul yesterday at 2 p. si. by special train, We are uniikr obligations to lion. 11. M. Rice and’ E. C. Clarke Esq. for copies of the Globe containing I the Hbfise proceedings of the_l9th upon the St. Croix ! Land Grant. A recent Washington letter says; Mr. Win. Branch is earnestly working to secure an appropriation for the Duluth harbor. If he succeeds ! he will have achieved a wonderful success with the j temper of the present Congress. Don’t fail to attend the lecture of Judge Gatos on the ‘ Lot of life,” next Monday evening at 7 o’clock at the Court Room, before the Superior Library Associa tion. The well known ability of the speaker renders it certain the lecture will be an able and interesting 1 one. A i tnriJ party of ladies and gentlemen went over to Duluth on Tuesday to attend religious services by Bid.<p Whipple of the Episcopal Church. Rev. Mr. Gilfillan was ordained Priest in the morning, and sev eral were confirmed members of the church in the evening. Du. Ber ington has resigned his position as princi pal of the Graded School. The board of directors should lose no time in procuring the services of a com petent teacher fot this school. They should not allow the advanced scholars to suffer a day for the want of proper school facilities.. Pcbuc Work. —Our town authorities have a force of men at work repairing Quebec Pier. The pier is be ing raised in several places where it had settled, and is undergoing a pretty general overhauling. Another force is engaged in getting out sidewalk ties for use in the spring. The ties are being cut on the townsite east of the Nemadji River. Tmt stage and express line of Messrs. Shaw & Ingalls between Superior and Duluth, js doing a lively busi ness. The proprietors furnish good, comfortable ac commodations for passengers, are prompt and careful in the carriage and delivery of freight and express packages, and well deserve thcj.iberal patronage their line is receiving. In the Time.- of io-d-ty will be foAiud an interesting letter from Boston. The author will be at once recog nized by Iris tlsrec or four acquaintances in this local ity, notwithstanding his non de plafco. The tribes in the depths of Kilchi Gum me will be particularly glad to have tidings from their big brother at the “Hub.” We hope to hear often from the genial Atte-ko-meg. The editor of the Duluth TrUmnc says the ice from the •‘vicinity of Bayfield,” was what did the damage to the Breakwater. If said ice was no thicker than it is m our harbor ant’ would injure the breakwater as much as the late storm has, with the aid of a gale of wind, we wonder what eighteen inches of solid blue ice would do in a like storm. Why, it would knock the Zenith breakwater higher than “Gilderoy’s kite.” —Bayfield Press. Bayfield, Superior *> Dclvth Stage Company.— The tri weekly line of stages established by this Com pany over the new road recently built between Supe rior and Bayfield, is doing an excellent passenger and freight business.
