The New York World ask ?d Carl Sehurz for his opinion as to the possibility of a war with Germany. His reply was positive and forceful. He said that a war between the United States and Germany would be so awful, so incalculable a calami ty, that only the most absolute and evident necessity could serve as an excuse for it; that not even the wild est jingo on either side would pre tend that such a necessity existed or was in prospect; that there was no real question of difference what ever between the two countries im portant enough to disturb their ancient friendship; that a war be tween them would therefore be not only criminal but idiotic —an absurd atrocity, a murderous uonsense. ‘‘Even to suggest the possibility of such a war,” added Mr. Sehurz, ‘‘un der such circumstances and to agitate the public mind by such suggestions, is a piece of mischievous reckless ness.” Mr. Sehurz is eminently right in deprecating war. He is also right in saying there is no necessity for war. He will have to allow a little latitude, however, for discussion on the subject, and even speculation. There have been wars which were necessary —wars which were crimin al. idiotic, absurd, atrocious, mur derous —and their absurdity did not prevent great loss of life and expendi ture of money. Those conflicts in which both sides were right—each from its point of view—have been very few. That one country has wanted war has seemed to be an al most inevitable conclusion from in cidents of the blockade of Venezuel an ports. The Enquirer agrees with Mr. Sehurz, thab chances are against war with Germany; but if there is to be no conflict it wiil not be because jingoes in high places are not trying to make one. —Cincinnati Enquirer. And when Grosseilliers and Radison Plowed up through the northern sntw, When Hiawatha and laughing Minnel aha Were creatures of a time most sweet And Rip Van Winkle dropped to slumber And snoozed until liis whiskers grew “a leet” And back in days of Gitcliee Gurnee You may then have heard of the Jladger st; te From tlie dim past down to present Human nature has had the same gate. Bob will have all the fame But conditions—well They’llle the same. Brain-Food Nonsense. Another ridiculous food fad has been branded by the most compe tent authorities. They have dis pelled the silly notion that one kind of food is needed for brain, another for muscles, and still another for bones. A correct diet wiil not only nourish a particular part of the body, but it will sustain every other Dart. Yet, however good your food miv be, its nutriment is destroved bv indigestion or dyspepsia. You must prepare for their appearance or prevent their coming by taking regular doses of Green’s August Flower, the favorite medicine of the healthy millions. Uses of Salt. Do you know that common salt, dampened, will remove the discolo ration on cups and saucers which is the result of tea and coffee and careless washing? That it will take the egg stain from silver? That it will restore in great measure colors faded in washing or keep them from fading if used in the rinsing water? That nothing cleans China matting or willow furniture so well as a salt and water scrubbing with a scrub bing brush? That it is an excellent dentifrice? That if the chimney gets on fire salt put upon the fire will deaden the flame? And how many even old cooks know that when the blaze from dripping fat on the coals is charring the steak they are broiling the trouble can be stopped by throwing a little salt on the fire ? Warring Birds. An unwritten law of birddom seems to be that it is never worth while to resist an opponent who seems to be in deadly earnest unless you have reason to be in deadly ear nest yourself. One result of this is that you often see large birds fly ing in apparent terror before angry small ones. A correspondent men tions having seen missel thrush pur sued by sparrow, rook by missel thrush, sparrowhawk by rook and missel thrush hv wren. So that we have a circle which could he indefi nitely expanded with intermediate graduations, showing how little log ic there is in the warfare of wild birds. —Country Life.
