The enormous value of continual practice with the foils as a means of securing and preserving good health is, in my humble opinion , the main reason for the steady hold of fencing upon pubic favor in France and Italy, comments Frederick A. SclTwab in Outing. It is only of late years that the attention bestowed by medical men upon physical exercise — in France, at least, where Dr. Lagrange’s treatises have become classical —has given prominence to the worth of fencing as a health-factor. Every one knows—or rather everyone should know —that fencing presses into service every muscle of the hu man frame; that it creates and devel ops suppleness and quickness; that it is not a violent exercise, in so far as injury by strain is involved; and, finally, that its perils are compara tively few. The proportion of mis haps to the number of fencers, how ever, is infinitesimal. Marcella Sembrich, the opera sing er, is not bereaved of her husband, Wilhelm Stengel, as the first dis patches said, but it is her husband’s brother Emil, a Dresden art dealer, who has died. It is noted that in the course of her four years before the American public she has been pursued by one grief after another, —the death of her son, of a son of Ker husban' by his first wife, of her husband’s mother, of whom she was very fond, and now of his brother, while last year she found her own mother seri ously ill on her return home. UNIONS FOUND GUILTY Officers Convicted of Entering Into Conspiracy to Drive a Man Out of Business —Court Says They Are Without Love or Respect for Law or Rights of Others. Chicago, May 12. —The teamsters’ strike yesterday was practically with out incident. Driving storms of wind and rain which swept the streets at frequent intervals had tne effect of driving a majority of the pickets from their posts and there was prac tically no disturbance of any kind in the business section of the city. On the outskirts, however, there were a few attacks made upon (Trivers of de livery wagons, but with Die exception of one colored man who was knocked senseless by a stone nobody was in jured. The most important part of the strike was the examination of wit nesses yesterday afternoon before Master in Chancery Sherman, who is taking testimony relative co the al leged violation of the federal injunc tions granted in favor of the employ ers’ association and of the express companies. Adolph Pfeil, for 11 years an em ploye of the United States Express company, but now a striker, refused to answer questions on the ground that he might incriminate himself. This caused a long wrangle between the attorneys for both sides, which was terminated by the master in chan eery announcing he would report witness’ refusal to the court. Charles Brown, an employe of the United States Express company, tes tified that he had been beaten by strikers. On cross examination he said revolvers were issued to the non union men by Mr. Copely. The de mand of the strikers’ attorney to know why the non-union men were armed in violation of the mayor’s proclamation brought on another long wrangle. After hearing the testi mony of Edward Buckley, a striker who said he did not continue at work because he was afraid of being killed, the hearing adjourned until today. Union Agents Guilty. Chicago, May- 12.—Five business agents of the labor unions were de cared guilty yesterday by Judge Chyt raus of forming a conspiracy to drive John M. Stiles, a contractor and painter, out of business. On the same decision the officers and mem bers of the six labor unions, defend ants in the case, are restrained from interfering with Stiles or his busi ness in any way. Stiles alleged that for ten years members of various labor organiza tions had conspired to call strikes and raise boycotts against him until oth er contractors were afraid to allow him to bid on their work. In his opinion Judge Chytraus de clared: “Lawless unioning cannot be permitted, and these men are shown to be without love or respect for law, and without regard for the legal rights of others.” Censure Drives Girl to Take Acid. La Crosse, Wis., May 12.—Censured by her parents for being out late at night, Miss Bessie Manning, a pretty young woman of 23, attempted suicide by drinking carbolic acid at her home. Miss Manning was formerly a popular telephone girl, but lost her position through being the leader of a strike of the employes. She has brooded over this matter until she became despond ent. It is believed she will recover. Lamb With Eight Legs. Manitowoc, Wis., May 12—A lamb born on the premises of Joseph Gubin of Maple Grove is exciting the wonder of the people in that .section of the country. The animal is the possessor of a double set of four fully developed legs, together with a part of two bodies and one head. Indians Not to Get School. Green Bay, Wis., May 12. —The 200 Indian children who attended school on the Oneida reservation prior to the burning of the government school building recently, may be without reg ular school quarters next fall. Supt. J. C. Hart of the reservation has been L*i formed that the general Indian depart ment has no funds for new appropria tions. The estimated cost of rebuild ing the school is about $12,000. Average Speed of 12.85 Knots. Newport, R. 1., May 12. —The gun boat Dubuque in a four hours’ speed trial yesterday made an average speed of 12.85 knots. The sea was rough at times and the wind fairly strong. It is announced that the boat will be accepted by the government. The contract called for 12 knots. Stove Manufacturers Elect. Chicago, May 12. —The national as sociation of stove manufacturers yes terday elected Walter P. Warren of Troy, N. Y., president, and T. E. Ho gan of Chicago secretary. Black Death, Plague, Rats, and Fleas. The origin and nature of the Black Death, which devastated Europe dur ing the Middle Ages, has never been clear. It seems certain that the in fection was brought by the ships of certain traders escaping from the Crimea, where they had been attack ed by the Tartars at a town on the River Don. During the attack the Tartars were stricken with violent plague, which caused great loss of life among them. In the hope of giving the curse to the pople of the besieged town, they threw bodies of their dead into the town. Their hopes were fulfilled, and the defenders were also attacked by the plague. These trad ers took to their ships and sailed to various European ports, Constantino ple, Venice, and Genoa, leaving the Black eDath everywhere behind them. This Black Death had certain striking features in common with the Bombay plague of India. A careful search in the records of Indian history has shown that there had been an out break of plague in India just previous to the time of the Tartar siege and the introduction of the Black Death iito Europe. These Tartars might very easily have taken the disease from the people of India. If that is the true story of the train of events, then the Black Death of the Middle Ages was the modern plague, a dis ease which we know to be caused by a certain specific bacillus. Efforts have been made to learn the means by which this disease is car ried ,and what causes lead to an out break. Certain facts bearing on these points have lately come to light and may load to a correct knowledge of rhe means of plague transmission. Rats have the disease and rat fleas have been examined and found to con tain quantities of the plague bacilli. Ordinarily the rat fleas are not found on man. During epidemics of plague, however, these rat fleas are found in notable quantities on human beings, and there is no evident reason why thy might not inoculate man by their bites. Doubtless, these things have something to do with the spread of plague, although enough is not yet known to allow the whole chain of events to be made out. —Collier’s. Racing Does not Improve Horseflesh. The race horse is a tool of the game, just as ivory chips are tools of the game of afro. Would ivory-chip carving, and a consequent faro game, improve the breed of elephants? Is racing, with its felon corollaries of murder and larceny, women disgraced and men destroyed, the one lone hope of the horse? With its horses like greyhounds, good only for a mile, does it produce those draught animals that Rosa Bonheur painted? Did it give us the cob, or the carriage, or the slow horse?
