PHELPS MAN EXPIRED Phelps Man, Aged 51 Years, Died April 29th-Buried at New London. James Cavanaugh, a resident of Phelps for a number of years, died at that place Thursday of heart trouble after ailing for a number of months. Mr. Cava naugh was brother-in-law to Martin H. Gaugham, section fore man at Phelps,, and had made his home with the latter fora number of years past. He was one of Phelps most respected cit izens and was well known to many Eagle Ki ver people. Jack Paquette, who has been confined in a hospital at Milwau kee for nearly two months recu perating from an operation for appendicitis, returned to his home at Boulder Junction last week. Real Estate Activity. Several choice village lots on the east side were disposed of in short order this week when C. Colman put a couple of blocks on the market. Amos Radcliffe. the VILAS COUNTY NEWS, EAGLE RIVER, WIS. GRIFFITH IS PEEVED He and Oneida County As semblyman Came Near Blows at Madison—Battle Was Wordy. According to Milwaukee news papers Barney N. Moran, repre sentative of Oneida county, and Sta te Forester Griffith came near to blows last week at Madison. 1 hey fought a wordy battle w hich was ended by friends of both parties separating them. It is claimed by Mr. Moran that Griffith got a bill through the senate appropriating $30,000 for fighting forest fires. Mr. Moran asked him about it and told him that if he would allow him to reduce it to $5,000 he would allow it to gothrough the assembly. Ihis was five times the amount the forestry depart ment has been spending accord ing to Barney, who claims that Griffith told that previously he had expended but SI,OOO per year. Griffith objected to this and is said to have declared that if Moran got in the way of the bill when it went to the senate he would publish him all over the state as a man against all ap propriations having as their ob ject the protection of the state’s property. Moran told him to go ahead, and several other mem bers of the house who were pres ent, also urged Griffith to add their names to the list. Grand Opening Ball. The Spider Lake Resort will hold its grand opening ball Sat urday, May Bth. The Spider Lake Resort is one of the most popular resorts on the west side of the county and the opening ball is always a social event of much import to people of that vicinity. Roy 0. Buck is the pro prietor. ♦ Over from Spider Lake. Frank Sherman and Roy Buck of Slider lake, and W. C. Lewis of Chicago who owns a summer home on that lake,drove over to the county seat Monday in the Buck auto. Close of School. Thursday evening was the.last day of school ir. the Pioneer dis trict. Miss Marion Boles, who was teacher at that school held the closing program at the John son school house. Several people from here were present and all re ported an enjoyable time. Re freshments were served after the program. To Re-apportion County. A re-apportionment of Vilas countv will be ordered by the state tax commission. This has been brought about by the recent action of the town of Phelps, it objecting to the apportionment made for that town by the Vilas county board of supervisors at the annual November meeting. The special committee on appor tionment gave the town of Phelps a percentage rate of 25 percent. At the hearing in thecourt house yesterday the state tax com mis commission examined a great many witnesses and it will ren der its decision soon. Town Assessors Hold Meeting. Acting upon the call of Ira S. Parker, assessor of incomes, the various town assessors of Vilas countv were in session at the court house yesterday forenoon. Mr. Hayward is able to get around on crutches and is down today visiting with friends. Child Bitten By Dog. The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hunter was brought down from State Line last Wed nesday by Walter Bent for surgi cal treatment. A strange dog had bitten thechild in the face, se verely lacerating the flesh above the eve and on one cheek. * After Lake Trout. The season for lake trout opened last week when the ice went out of the lakes. Several parties will take advantage of this sport and try their luck at both Black Oak and Thousand Island lakes this week, the best fishing is for the first twenty days after the lakes free them selves of ice. Callum and His Clover. Robert Callum of Three Lakes was up last week, called by the illness of his wife. Mr. Callum, who owns a farm near the Onei da county village, sold 700 lbs. of clover seed last week to the Robbins Lumber company at Rhinelander for $l4O cash. Sisson Building Cottages. John Sisson, clerk of Farming ton was in town Monday. Mr. Sisson operated “Billy’s Place” on Little St Germain having leased it for 1915.
