H. Kamke is over from Arbor Vitae this week. Francis McGregor went to Hiles yesterday morning. August Weil was a business visitor at Gagen Monday. Mrs. Joseph Foley was here last Thursday from Phelps. Miss Mary Gericke left Mon day for a short visit at Phelps. Henrv Nannv was down last week Wednesday from Donald son. Herb Warner is over from Say ner this week serving on the jury. Frank Foster, resort owner on Fishtrap lake is in attendance at court as a witness. C. H. Wagner, the Milwaukee land man, was here on business the past three days. Miss Lottie Ro wen left Thurs day last for Monico after a few days spent at the Belongy home. Axel Oberg, Andrew Hansen, Eli Thorsen, and George Blong are here this week as jurors in circuit court. Miss Anna Hcehn left Satur day for Minocqua after a several days visit with home people and friends in Eagle River. C. F. Colman of Duluth was at Eagle River the latter part of last week, the guest of his mother, Mrs. C. B. Colman. Miss Margaret Gauthier left Monday for her home at Lac du Flambeau after spending two weeks here visiting her brother Ben. Mrs. Leonard Marco left last Thursday for Rockland, La Crosse county, for a two month’s visit with Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Marco. Mrs. W. R. Walleck accom panied by Mrs. G. H. John Eschenbach and John Grenier are here from Arbor Vitae attending court as jurors. Mr. Eschenbach while a resident of Arbor Vitae, has for several months past been .working at Winegar. State Line News. John Frank, Walter Bent and Levi Krake are at the county seat this week serving as petit jurors at the January term of circuit court. T. W. Henderson, auditor for the National Surety company of New York, was here the first of the week checking up the accounts of F. P. Brewster, town treasurer. He is said to have found a shortage of $242.86 and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Brewster, to be served after the federal authorities get through with him on postoffice matters. Levi Krake has been appointed treasurer by the town board. The happiest little lady in this sec tion is Ethel St. Clair, who now is the owner of a beautiful Shetland pony which arrived last week. This pony was won by Ethel in a prize subscrip tion contest held recently by a popu lar farm paper embracing the entire United States. She stood fourth in subscription gathering among con testants. Dr. Junes Owpn Ely of Chicago has sent Ethel a buggy and harness for her “ponymobile ” Walter Bent is running a big log ging crew this winter, and he claims he has a three years cut to handle. Geo. St. Clair was at Eagle River, Monday. The Holstein cattle owners in this section are elated over the world’s record recently won by a Holstein cow. [A cut of the above cow is re produced in this week’s issue qf the News.— Ed.] C. A. Bent was down to the county seat Friday. Austin Bent, the Overland agent was up from Eagle River Saturday visiting home people. CARD OF THANKS. Little Miss Ethel St. Ciair wishes to express her thanks to those who assisted in securing a pony; espec ially those who worked so hard for her at Eagle River and Three Lakes. High School News. Miss Margaret Gauthier of Flam beau visited the high school last week. A high school party was held at the rink Friday evening. Dancing was the main amusement. Refreshments were served at eleven o’clock and a pleasant time resulted. Rev. Waters chaperoned the party. On account of the severe cold Fri day night the sleigh ride party was postponed a week later (Friday eve.) There’s “lots” of room. Carl Ellison has withdrawn from school. The basket ball team will travel to Tomahawk, Friday, to plav the high school team of ’ that city. Although Tomahawk beat Rhinelander on the latter’s floor Friday evening, we ex pect to turn the tables. In prepara tion for this game, practice was held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We are out for a win. Help us. Sev eral other games have been scheduled. Watch this column for their an nouncement. A large percentage of students are still absent on account of sickness. There are more absentees in the lower than in the upper. ■» Watersmeet News. Miss Addis Turney of Antigo is here visiting her sister Mrs. Steve McKinnon. Miss K. Kerman and Miss Irene Des Roches went to Ironwood Tuesday to attend the teachers institute return ing Wednesday. Tim Kilen of Ironwood was a visi tor here last week. Mrs. C. L. Durkee and son Claude were Ashland visitors Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kelly are the proud parents of a baby boy which arrived Friday. Correct Error in Name. In last week’s article referring to F. G. Mclntyre, ex-postmas ter of Eagle River, going to Rhinelander to give bonds for his appearance at federal court which is said will be held this month, The News unintentionally made the the article read “F. W.” Mclntyre. We make the correc tion gladly this week. Criminals Dark-Eyed. Over 75 per cent, of the world’s bigamists have had brown eyes. That Is an amazing fact. “I can tell a crim inal by his eyes,” said Vidocq, the famous French detective, and in doz ens of cases he stated that his sus picions were first aroused by seeing the eyes of the guilty person.
