A POEM OF MOTHERHOOD Her babe was, dead, ’twere better so. It died without a name, Not one in that great city knew Her glory, nor her shame. Alas her shame, for what ‘■'for lore? Before she understood? She trusted, too, was this her shame? Her crown was motherhood. Her babe was dead, what need to mourn? Her guilt was buried now, If one dark sin was on her soul, No stain was on her brow. Ah! who shall say if deep within, Her mother heart was rent? If bursting there within her breast, A flood of grief was pent? “Give backl” she cried, “Give me my child And give the world my shame I Give to me back my motherhood And give me all the blame I Give back to me the joy I felt— Give me the pangs I bore, Give back my child!” her tears fell fast, “I want I ask no more.” The morning broke, so calm she lay Sleep held her wearied eyes, She saw her babe in angel arms— She dreamed of Paradise. “I thank thee, Lord” her lips scarce moved, “I saw my baby smile, I know that thou did’st ope the gates For just t little whi e,” Her voice came soft, the Father heard Beyond the gates above: “Dear Lord, thon hast a father’s heart, Dost know a mothers love? Where thou art I shall never pe, I know that I am vile. Dear Lord, thou wilt not shut the gates For just a little while?” Still in her dreams she gently spoke; “To me great joy is given, I know my child is safe with thee— Safe in thy fold—in Heaven. For I can see my baby there, My grief it shall beguile, Dear Lord, I pray, swing wide the gates For just a little while.” “Fain would I look that blessed sight. To my sin-burdened eyes, I see a glory far away— The streets of Paradise, Where my poor feet shall never tread Nor aught that can defile My babe! My child! Hold back the gates For just a little while.” Who knows? If fell upon her ear A voice so faint—so sweet? Who knows? If in her dreams she heard The patter es little feet! So peaceful now—so beautiful, No guilt was there to chide, A light from heaven shone on her fa ce— The gates were open wide. The above, also written by Col. Smith, was handed in by one of our lady readers, and should have appeared before, but in the rush incidental to “Town Meeting” got lost. > Sale st Feed Stables S. W. SMITH, Prop.
