SV."" J. Sehwartz, of Chicago, who makes this territory twice a year in the gents furnishings line and inci dentally make himself generally agreeable among a large number of friends of many yevrs landed in town Saturday. " Soon after, he formed the acquaintance of a new relative, Mr. P. Leviash, of Milwaukee, who is visiting his daughter, Mrs. Joe Frankel. Of course the talk led to fishing and a trip soon planned for the next day. A.man to do the row ing was the next thing needful and they cordially invited M. Frankel to go along. Years having taught him what it means to row two heavy men around all day, he refused by offering the reasonable excuse that he would have to fix the car su that the child ren could have it to use in the after noon. The Chicago man then men tioned that he read not long ago of a man that caught a clam containing a $25,000 pearl while fishing, and that as the father of a Chicago alderman it was up to him to wear a pretty good scarf pin. His new found rela tive listened with amazement at this easy way of finding money and the reckless thoughts concerning its disposal. Said he’'d b een fishing ev ery day since he came and no one had told him to be on the watchoyt = for revenue in this form. He seemed to feel as though one with whom «he hai placed a precious trust was not acting altogether on the square with him in not putting him wi-'s"e"..g ‘He suggested that they get A. McKenzie ‘to take them in his boat, not saying anything about pearl fishing and if ‘they should get any, cut ‘the purse 50-50. Schwartz agreed and they ‘lprevailed upon McKenzie to take ‘them. They wereout all day and ‘the guide caught nearly all the fish that were caught. IHe said he never saw two such lifeless fishermen be fore. Even when Leviash caught a ;5 pound pike they betrayed but little ‘entbusiasm, but when toward night Schwartz hooked a° clam, and the pair grew wildly excited and began ‘talking in some foreign tongue, he knew they were in some kind of plot ‘but of coursecould not tell what it 'was. When they reached the boat ’house it- was quite dark. Both at once jumped out and while Mr. Lev iash it and held matches, his friend attacked the clam with an axe. In the uncertain light, his aim was more than dangerous for any standing in close range or it so appeared to Mr. Leviash, who stepped back and into the slip where the water stood ftive feet deep and had it not been for the ready aid furnished by Mr. McKen zie the danger would have been ser ious. When he reached the dock again he demanded to kncw why his business partner had made no . at tempt to assist him—to be coolly in | formed that with only a private, ver | bal agreement between them, in the - event of his sudden demise, the en tire pearl fisheries stake would pass into the hands of the surviving part ‘ner. Overcome by such pertidy Mr. Leviash unfolded the whole thing to the preserver of his life." Sehwartz upun leaving town is known to have presented his landlady with a large ‘unset pearl. Some think it the fruit -of Sunday’s labor. Others think he : may have won it in a poker game somewhere. . . t' Certificate of Nominations. For Ist Assembly District. Vilas County.
