Lalla was received by Eagle River friends Saturday, following the previous in formation that he had gone toa Clica go hospital to be operated on for ap pendicitis. Mr. Lalla left here about Nov. 20. to spend the winter with his wife at Little Rock, Ark., and ap parently in the best of health. He had been a resident of Eagle River for two years,, engaged in the real es tate business, and gained a large ac quaintance who-sympathize with the ‘wife and son in their affliction. M. S. Moran, one of the early day residents of Eagle River, later re moving to Grand Rapids where they lived until their removal to Denver, three years ago, died there last week as the result of injuries received in a street collision of automobiles as he attempted crossing the street. His wife is a sister of P. D. Walsh and Mrs. Kate Tierney. A daughter,Miss Katherine Moran was until their rc moval te Denver, 4 frequent visitor here. : “The funeral of Miss Carrie Herman was held from the Boyer home Mon «day afternoon conducted by Elder Stebbeds of Clearwater. She was a sister of Mrs. Boyer and had suffered with tubercolosis for several years. The family recontly moved here from Clearwater. He opened his patriotic tour at the Belasco Theater, Washington, D. C., on December 18. Mr. MecCor mack has cancelled several important engagements on his regular, schedule so that he might give benpefit con certs instead. He has insisted -on paying all expenses, so that the gross ‘receipts will go directly to the War IvFund. : ~ This generous gift is the outcome of a recent meeting between Mr. Me- Cormack and John D. Ryan, who is a member of the Red Cross War Coun cil. The work of the Red Cross had been under discussion, when Mr Me- Cormack said: ~ : ! “I should like to domy bit through the Red Cross. I'am willing to give a series of concerts. from the Atlantic to the Paciffc for the benefit of the Red Cross, in which the gross pro ceeds shall be turned over to the or ganization. 1 will pay all my own ex penses and Kkeep on singing until I have earned one hundred thousand dollars for the Red Cross.” The offer was enthusiastically accepted. : Made Good Impression. Griffith Thomas, of Hurley, unop posed candidate for the Assembly, paid Eagle River a visit Monday. Adams and his man left :the House to chop wood en & distant-part of the farm, leaving his mother alone. 'Some time later hawving cecasion to go into the sitting rcom, from the kitch en, she discovered fire making its progress around the easings of the room. She began the work of put ting it out and did apparently. When her son returned at night and was informed of the accident he began to search for trouble, and found it, nice ly smoldering between the partitions. Lively work with. an axe and water however, put it out with no serious damage done. Had it occurred earli er on any day taking Mr. Adams from home several hours, the honse would have certainly burned with possible loss of life. Bugs at Phelps. . The town of Phelps: furnished two cases for disposition by county au thorities this week. One, an insane man that Sheriff Jackson took to Oshkosh. Tuesday. The other was one of a more peculiar nature. A stranger drifted into one of the camps last week and was given work until it was found that one of his feet was in a frightful condition from freezing. He was turned over to the town officials and was brought down Monday morning by Hunter Case. He either would not or could not give any account of himself beyond say ing his nime was Frank Brown. Papers found on him indicated that to be true and that as late as Novem ber, he’d been a railroad employe in Dakota, and where information re gardirg him vras sent for. His foot had reached a condition where am putation was thought advisable and he was sent to Antigo for that pur pose Wednesday. » Report Fine Time.
