A SAD YEAR.
The following lines wn-e written lr.
1857 by Harriet Beecher Stowe on the
death of her son Henry:
One year—one year—one litle year.
And so much gone!
And yet the even flo w of life
Moves calmly on.
Where hast thor been this year, be
loved
What hast thou seen?
What visions fair, what giorlous life?
Where hast thou been?
The veil, the veil, so thin, so strong
Twixt us and thee!
The mystic veil, when shall it fall
That we may see?
Not dead, not sleeping, not even gout-
But present still.
And waiting for the coming hour
Of God’s sweet w'ilL
Lord of the living and the dead.
Our Savior dear,
We lay in silence at thy feet
This sad, sad year.

“ Dear Mbs. Pinkitam : The world

CONSUMPTION
ENDURED AN AWFUL SHOCK.
Baltimore Man Lives Through Doc- i
tors’ and Electricians' Wonder.
After having been shocked by a < ur
rent of 2.300 volts of electricity
Charles F. Beck, an engineer of the
Mount Washington Electric Light and
Power company, still lives. Mr.
Beek had an alternating electric cur
rent from a wire which is always
charged with over 2,000 voits pass
through his body. He has severe
burns on his arms, legs and body. Th<-
third finger of his left hand is als. •
badly burned.
The affair occurred last Friday
about 6 o'clock at the power-house of
the company. Falls road, about ones
half mile north of Mount Washington.
The damp floor of the room, which i
was being scrubbed, helped to <om i
pleto a circuit, and Mr. Beck says he ;
received a full current <-apa< tty of the
plant.
A few seconds after he received the
shock he was snatched from his posi
tion against the switchboard he had
gone to watch by the oiler and fire
man. For five hours he remained an
conscious. Dr. William .1. Todd of j
Mount Washington attended him. and 1
was greatly surprised when informed
how the injuries were received.
Dr. M. J. Gatley, 111 South Broad
way. is now Mr. Beck’s attending
physician, the latter having been taken
front his home adjoining the power
house to the home of his father-in
law, Jeremiah Meehan, 115 South
Bead street. Baltimore Sun.
TWO SCHOOLS.
I put my heart to school
In the world where men grow wise,
“Go out,” I said, "and learn the rule;
Come back when you win the prize.”
My heart came back again,
“And where is the prize?” I cried,
"The rule was false, and the prize was
pain,
And the teacher’s name wus Pride.”
I put my heart to school,
In the woods where wild birds sing.
In the fields where flowers spring,
Where brooks run cool and clear,
And the blue of heaven bends near.
“Go out,” I said, “you are only a fool,
But perhaps they can teach you here,"
"And why do you stay so long,
My heart, and where do you roam?”
The answer came with a laugh and a
song—
"l And this school is home."
