THE WATERTOWN WEEKLY LEADER (Successor to the Watertown Republican) PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY MORNING BY P. H. SWIFT, PUBLISHER Terms of Subscription: 11.50 per Year, Strictly in Advance; Six Months, 75 cents, Three Months, 50 cents. Sample Copies Sent Free on Application. E as Second-Class Matter, May 4th, 1905, in the Postoffice at Watertown, Wisconsin, under the Act of Congress, Adopted March 3rd, 1879 Watertown, Wisconsin, Jefferson County, Friday, June 23, 1911 WHAT DOES IT SIGNIFY. It is said, that figures do not lie. It true, the conditions in this coun try are truly alarming judging trom the talk of the demagogues, in 1890 the savings bank money in the United States was equiva lent to $24.35 for every man, woman and child in the country, in 1900 it was equivalent to $34.78 and in 1910 to $45-05 for every man, woman and child, an increase between 1890 and 1910 of nearly fitly per cent for every person. What of it? What does it signify? Why, according to Bryan, that the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. And, according to Roosevelt, that the malefactors of great means are robbing the benefactors of small means worse than ever. And, according to Wilson, that the “face of the poor” is being ground even harder in this Repub- j lie under the “fist of organized wealth.” And, according to LaFollette, that “special privilege” is robbing the workingman of “his crust” af ter having stripped him of his clothes. And, according to Davis of Ar kansas, that the “bloodsuckers of capital” are impovershing the “small man” to “bloat” their al ready “bloated” pccketbooks. The bank reports all over the country show large deposits, in dicitive of a marvelous prosperity in which all classes are partici pants. It is surprising that people will listen to the croakings of dema gogues and by their votes reverse conditions and destroy the pros perity which has prevailed under wise statesmanship. LIBELING LINCOLN. The organization of the Milwau kee Republican club, articles for which were filed with the secretary of state Saturday, marks one of the steps in the progressive move ment. The purpose of the organi zation as set forth in its articles is that of “promoting the fundamen tal and living principles of the par ty which were inspired and are re flected in the life work of our first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, and in order to secure and perfect in its full purity the gov ernment of the people, by the peo ple and for the people.” —Fond du Lac Commonwealth. Yes, and the insurgents, known in those days as “copper heads,” abused Lincoln, as the insurgents are now abusing Taft. Talking one thing on the stump and doing the direct opposite when it comes to doing something for the over taxed and burdened people. As Lincoln said, they may fool some people some of the time, some all the time, but not all the people all the time. Their object is becom ing too transparent —office is their only aim and desire. CONFIDENCE NECESSARY. Confidence is absolutely neces sary for national prosperity. When it is destroyed, all kinds of busi ness suffers, for the wealthy are provided for until confidence is re stored. For the past ten years, a large number of our public men have been giving their best ener gies toward the destruction of busi ness confidence and have appealed to the people, the thoughtless among them being influenced in their political acts by their sophis try and demagogical appeals to their cupidity, selfishness and dis regard for their own interests. The insurgents have built up a formid able faction by continually ham mering confidence and buying space in magazines and newspapers to preach the gospel of hate and sing ing their own praises to secure po litical advancement. Muckrakers have been employed at so much per line and space bought at so much per inch, to laud insurgents and abuse honest men working for the welfare of both the country and people. As might have been anticipated, the party now in power in the nation will be defeated in the next national election and then, possibly the people will awaken to the political errors they have fool ishly committed. Thoughts by the Way. During the civil war there were what was then known as “bush whackers.” They were not attached to neither the federal nor confeder ate armies but preyed upon the people indescriminately, but wTien caught, they claimed to be con federates. We have business “bushwhackers” at the present time in congress who claim to be republicans, but like their southern prototypes of the civil war, their aim and purpose is destructive. They are destroying confidence and business, and it behooves the fpeo ple at the earliest possible moment to elect men to congress, who will work for the good of the country and not exclusively for themselves. Monday, a vote on the pension bill was dodged in the House of Representatives by an adjourn ment before a vote could be taken. It will be remembered that the democratic papers and stump speakers in the north during the political campaign last summer promised that in case the democ racy was successful there would be favorable pension legislation as far as Ithey were concerned. They simply lied to deceive the old vet erans and their friends in order to secure their support. A pension bill passed in the Senate which is republican, and it is dodged in the House which is democratic. The veterans can draw their own con clusions. William J. Bryan’s strong suit is to scold and find fault with those who insist on thinking for them selves and not accepting his ideas and opinions on national issues. At the present time, he is pound ing the southern democrats, show ing a total absence of gratitude, for had it not been for the southern democrats, when he was a presi dential candidate two-several times, he would not have known that he had been a candidate. Like some other politicans of his class he is not true to his friends and his opinions change too often. ' Saved His Wife’s Life. “My wife would have been in her grave to-day,” writes 0. H. Brown, of Musca dine, Ala., “if it had not I jen for Dr. King’s New Discovery. She was down in her bed, not able to get up without help. She had a severe bronchial trouble and a dreadful cough. I got her a bottle of Dr. King’s New Discovery, and she soon began to mend, and was well in a short time.” Infallible for coughs and colds, its the most reliable remedy on earth for desperate lung trouble, hemor rhages, lagrippe, asthma, hay fever, croup and wooping cough. 50c, 11.00. The friend thought the matter over a bit and then advised the father as follows: “Lock your boy in a room where there is a bible on the table, an apple and some pieces of money. After a quarter of an hour open the door noiselessly and see what the boy is doing. If he is reading the bible make him a clergyman; if his attention is concentrated on the apple mako him a farmer, and if he is amus ing himself by counting the money it’s plain that he is meant to be a financier.” The experiment was tried and when the friend inquired what the result was the father replied: “I found him sitting on the bible, he had pocketed the money and was eating the apple.” “Make him a member of eosgress then” was the advise of the friend. Mr. G—l suppose you find yonr daughter l very much improved by her two-year stay at college? It is quite probable, that the time is not far distant when a laboratory on a large scale will be established fchere for the manufacture of the Family Remedies and become one of our leading industry. Our Banks Last week, the reports of the three banks in this city were published in the columns of the Leader. No city of its size can show better nor more reliable financial institutions than Watertown. The aggregate financial resources of the three banks is nearly $3,000,000 with millions back of them. This city cer tainly has abundant reasons for being proud of the Bank of Watertown, the Merchants National Bank and the Wis consin National Bank. Senatorial and Assembly Districts Under the new senatorial and assem bly apportionment, should the bills now under consideration in the legislature pass, the counties of Jefferson and Dodge will constitute the Thirteenth senatorial district and both Jefferson and Dodge counties will each continue to have two assemblymen. The senatorial district will be democratic by a majority that will obv! ite the necessity of canvassing the vote and there will be about as much chance for a republican candidate in either of the assembly district, as they would be for an insurgent to be nomi nated and elected to the presidency by the republicans. Forestating all others, the Leader nominates Hon.C. F. Viebahn for state senator on the democratic ticket. During his visit, he walked over the farm, which is one of the very best in the township, and noted the many changes wrought by German industry and improved methods of farming. He also, noted the marvelous improvements in the surronding country and in the city during his absence, which exceeded, his expectations. The farm probably could not be pur chased at the present time, for five times what it was sold for by the senior Dailey, who evidently, had no idea of the won derful increase in realty values, which would be experienced by those who held onto their farms. Mr. Dailey, who is a practicing attorney, enjoyed nis visit to childhood home and with the Volkmann family who made it very pleasant for him. No Change Made The new apportionment bill provides for two assembly districts in this county arranged as follows: First district- Towns of Concord, Farm ington, Hebron, Ixonia, Milford, Palmyra, Sullivan, Watertown, the villages of Johnson Creek, Palmyra, and the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Seventh wards of the city of Watertown. Second district—Towns of Axtalan, Coldspring, Jefferson, Koshkonong, Lake Mills, Summer, Waterloo, Oakland, the villages of Waterloo, the cities of Fort Atkinson, Jefferson and Lake Mills.
